Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a midwife with a keen interest in safeguarding to join the Hillingdon Hospital midwifery team.

We are looking for a midwife with a passion to work within the existing Topaz Team at Hillingdon Hospital to provide care and support to women and their families with complex social and/or psychological needs. The successful applicant will receive support from the Topaz Team, Named Midwife for Safeguarding, and the Safeguarding Families Team within the Trust.

The post holder will work in collaboration with multi agency partners to ensure that women and babies cared for at Hillingdon Maternity Unit are safeguarded and their welfare promoted. 

The midwife will work within a small geographically based team who currently support women as the named midwife through the antenatal and postnatal period. This service may change with the implementation of Continuity of Carer Teams and supporting clinical shifts across the maternity unit.

As an autonomous practitioner with excellent communication and team working skills, you will work closely with trust staff and other health care professionals and partnership agencies who input into maternity care to ensure that women experiencing complex social or psychological needs during pregnancy and the post-natal period receive high quality multi-disciplinary care.

Main duties of the job

Key responsibilities for the role:


1.    The midwife is responsible and accountable for her/his own midwifery practice.

2.    To provide antenatal intrapartum and postnatal care, reporting and deviations from the normal to a more experienced midwife, and respond appropriately to all emergency situations.

3.    To reinforce professional advice through supporting and encouraging couples in active parenting skills in the postnatal period to promote well-being and safety of mother and baby.

4.    To encourage the parents in the active steps to promote effective feeding of their baby within the UNICEF guidelines.

5.    Work in collaboration with multi agency partners to ensure that women and babies cared for at Hillingdon Maternity Unit are safeguarded and their welfare promoted.

6.    Encourage a holistic, non-stigmatizing approach to support women with complex social and /or psychological needs, identifying and supporting cultural needs.

7.    To provide care during the antenatal and post-natal period to women with complex social and/or psychological needs in tier 3 & 4 of the Stronger Families Threshold Document   ensuring appropriate risk assessment is undertaken to improve outcomes for families and babies.  

8.    Attend the bimonthly maternity safety net meetings.

9.    Ensure that at all times the interest and well-being of babies are paramount, whilst continuing to act as an advocate for their mothers/birthing person.
