Job overview

We are looking for an enthusiastic, clinically focused Medical Microbiologist to join the Microbiology team of three Consultants (including this post), all of whom are based at The Hillingdon Hospital.

Microbiology laboratory services for the Trust are provided in partnership with North West London Pathology (NWLP) at the Infection and Immunity Hub Laboratories at Charing Cross Hospital. The NWLP Infection and Immunity Laboratories have UKAS accreditation.  One of the Consultant Microbiologists from Hillingdon attends the laboratory each week on Friday to do a bench round and provide clinical liaison.

There are opportunities to build the clinical service at Hillingdon through Antimicrobial Stewardship, development of an Outpatient Parenteral Antimicrobial Therapy (OPAT) Service, Multi-Disciplinary Team meetings and additional ward presence.

The successful candidate will in discussion with their colleagues in the first instance mutually agree to undertake one of the rotational departmental lead roles.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will be responsible to the Divisional Director of Mount Vernon and Clinical Support Services at The Hillingdon Hospital, and the job plan will be negotiated annually.

It is a 10 PA post – 8.5 direct clinical care (DCC) 1.5 supporting professional activities (SPA), the latter includes clinical and educational supervision, audit and personal CPD. Personal CPD must be included as part of annual appraisal which is mandatory and required for the revalidation process.

A proportion of this DCC and SPA relating to laboratory services is delivered through Northwest London Pathology (NWLP) and for these sessions the post–holder is responsible to the Lead Microbiologist for NWLP, then Head of Specialty for Infection and Immunity and then to the Clinical Director for North West London Pathology.
