Job overview

Paediatric Epilepsy Nurse Specialist

Band  7

Paediatric Unit

15 hrs per week (Thursday & Friday with some flexibility)

RSCN / RN Child – Essential

PET Level 1, 2 & 3 qualification desirable

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and enthusiastic paediatric nurse to join our CQC rated ‘Good’ team.

As the epilepsy nurse specialist you will work alongside the paediatric epilepsy consultant, paediatric matron and senior staff both within the paediatric department and throughout the Trust to ensure paediatric epilepsy care is of a high standard and meets the recommendations of the new Epilepsy Best Practice Tariff.

This role will be very diverse and requires that you have not only significant experience in epilepsy care but also the leadership and management skills to ensure any guidelines or policies required to support the epilepsy service are developed and implemented across all paediatric areas. The successful applicant will have excellent communication skills and will use these to develop, implement and deliver strategies to support children and families with epilepsy, empowering them through education and supported self-management to improve the quality of life they and their child experiences.

Main duties of the job

This new post represents a hugely exciting opportunity to improve the care we provide for our children and young adults with epilepsy. We are seeking an individual who is proactive, innovative, and able to work collaboratively and independently to develop a co-ordinated and responsive service for our patients and their families.

Although this role requires a weekday work pattern, there will be a need for the successful applicant to work flexibly both clinically to support practice and in a leadership role attending meetings and representing the service both on and off site.

As a senior nurse in this specialist role you will need to demonstrate that you are enthusiastic and highly motivated. You will be well organised and able to work both independently and as part of a team. You will be computer literate. Using these skills you will work closely with the paediatric matron and lead epilepsy consultant to ensure the paediatric service is able to provide children and their families with the highest possible standards of care within an ever changing and challenging environment.

Working for our organisation

The Hillingdon hospital has a paediatric epilepsy caseload of over 250 children and this number is fast expanding. The reorganisation of children’s services in North West London means that a number of children attend Hillingdon hospital for their care despite living outside the borough, most commonly in Ealing. The co-located Hillingdon Child Development Centre, a community based service, has a caseload of a similar number.
