Job overview
We're looking for a Chair to join our Technology Appraisal Committee .
NICE Technology Appraisal committees assess the clinical and cost-effectiveness of (primarily) new medicines to see if they should be routinely commissioned in the NHS. If the committee makes a positive recommendation, the NHS has a legal obligation to fund the treatments, usually within 90 days. The Technology Appraisal committees look at innovative technologies (such as CAR-T in oncology), technologies that have the potential to improve the health of a large number of people (such as inclisiran in cardiovascular disease) or make a meaningful difference to people with very severe disease (such as risdiplam in spinal muscular atrophy).

Main duties of the job
The chair ensures that the committee takes full account of the evidence in developing recommendations and considers the analysis and interpretation of the evidence prepared by the evidence review team.
While all committee members must ensure appropriate consideration of the implications of guidance for equality, this is a particular responsibility for the chair.
The chair should also offer committee members feedback and comment on their contribution to the committee, on an annual basis, for revalidation purposes or personal development.
The chairs of advisory committees are in a special position in relation to the work of their committee and have greater scope to influence the outcome of discussions. The chair helps the committee to work collaboratively, ensures a balanced contribution from all committee members and takes decisions about the potential conflicts of interest of their committee members.

Working for our organisation
The Chair is remunerated for 5 Programmed Activities per week. See non-staff reimbursement policy.
NICE will pay reasonable out-of-pocket expenses, including train fares and hotel costs when necessary, for attending committee meetings.
Other expenses:
NICE recognises that in some circumstances individuals will need to arrange for carers or support workers to accompany them to a meeting, or to take over unpaid caring responsibilities while they are at a meeting – this includes childcare or care of a family member with a disability or other additional needs. The circumstances in which NICE can provide reimbursement for such costs are outlined in the non-staff reimbursement policy.
Time commitment:
Attend 12 day-long committee meetings a year. Our committees have been meeting virtually using online software since the COVID-19 pandemic. A small number of meetings are held in person.

Membership will be for 3 years and will be eligible for renewal. The second and further periods of office will be for periods of up to 3 years by mutual agreement, up to a maximum of 10 years.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The Chairs' main responsibilities:
- Chair the meetings of the advisory committees and lead the committee in the application of NICE methods in the development of guidance documents
- Attend, and occasionally chair, committee training days
- Review and edit the documentation for scoping, consultation, and the final guidance, in collaboration with the NICE team
- Ensure compliance at all meetings with the NICE conflicts of interests policy, code of conduct and the methodology and process
- Prepare for meetings in collaboration with technical and project staff, including development of presentations to the committee
- Advise on and input to the development of topic selection, methods and processes used by the programmes within the Medicines Evaluation directorate
- Support committee member recruitment and induction as necessary
- Attend NICE Board Strategy meetings as appropriate

- Experience in health or social care (as appropriate), either as a practicing health or social care professional, or working in or in association with the wider aspects of health or social care or the healthcare industries Maximum 400 words.
