Job overview
The post holder will complement and develop existing services through the provision of specialist knowledge & expertise in Anaesthetics.
The post holder will complement and develop existing services through the provision of specialist knowledge & expertise in Anaesthetics primarly based at Fairfield General Hospital.
Fairfield Hospital situated in Bury, close to the M66 and M60 motorways on the outskirts of Greater Manchester, 14 miles north of Manchester city centre.
The hospital has excellent elective orthopaedic services, including high risk elective orthopaedics, and it is a major hub for elective orthopaedic surgery. We also have elective and emergency ENT services for the northern sector of the Northern Care Alliance (Fairfield General Hospital, Royal Oldham Hospital, and Rochdale Infirmary). This includes complex airway cases. Anaesthetic services are also provided for 23 hour/day case general surgery, gynaecology, community dental and cardiology. There are 8 theatres at FGH, and 6 theatres are high airflow suitable for prosthetic joint surgery. Along with Rochdale Infirmary, Fairfield is one of the NCA’s two elective hubs.
Main duties of the job
You will be required to have full registration with the General Medical Council and a valid licence to practice and be on the specialist register for Anaesthesia, or be within 6 months of CCT or equivalent at the time of interview.
Expertise in upper & lower limb block is essential, as is significant experience in anaesthesia for ENT surgery. A proportion of the direct clinical care (DCC) will be delivered at one of the other sites within the NCA.

Registration
Essential criteria
- Full registration with the General Medical Council with a valid license to practice
- Inclusion on the Specialist Register / Admission to the Register within 6 months of interview (CCST or CCT in Anaesthetics (or within six months of entitlement)
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of Accredited Clinical & Educational Supervision of Medical Learners’
Qualifications
Essential criteria
- MBChB or show evidence of equivalent training and experience
- Current in ALS
Desirable criteria
- Post Graduate Degree e.g. MD, PhD, MSc
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Wide experience in Anaesthesia and critical care, including resuscitation
- Expertise in upper & lower limb regional anaesthesia
- Good understanding of Clinical Governance
Desirable criteria
- Significant experience in obstetric anaesthesia, neuro anaesthesia, and major trauma
Communication
Essential criteria
- All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English that are adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues
