Job overview

We are looking for an enthusiastic specialist practitioner to join our Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale Parent Infant Mental Health Service (PIMHS) in order to contribute to the implementation of a community based therapeutic service; this will be in line with the Best Start for Life framework for parents to be, infants and their families with a particular focus on early intervention.

You will be joining an experienced, skilled and highly committed team. You will receive line management supervision from the clinical lead for PIMHS and clinical supervision from one of our highly specialist clinical psychologists/ psychotherapists.

Main duties of the job

Working as a specialist practitioner in the Parent Infant Mental Health Service, the role will involve providing therapeutic support to families in the antenatal and postnatal period, liaising closely with colleagues in Health Visiting, Midwifery, IAPT, Perinatal CMHT, NICU and Children’s Social Care and Family Hubs.

A key aspect of the job will be to promote and raise awareness of parent infant mental health across the borough, enhancing knowledge, skills and confidence in the local PIMH workforce through training, consultation, supervision and promotion, particularly within the locality Family Hubs.

The work will also involve supporting the implementation and delivery of therapeutic PIMH groups across the local borough in partnership with external agencies.

Working for our organisation

The postholder will be a member the Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale Parent Infant Mental health Service, a multi- disciplinary parent-infant mental health (PIMH) service for under 2s. We provide a clinical service, training, consultation, and supervision across the large multi-agency network of professionals. We have good links with Health Visiting, Maternity Services, Children’s Centres, Adult Mental Health, Voluntary sector, Children’s Social Care and Early Help.  

The team has regular face-to-face team meetings, individual supervisions and line management.   There are regular opportunities for support and CPD. Person specification

Education/ qualification

Essential criteria
  • Relevant Core Professional qualification in mental health or social care, or clinical psychology, or child & adolescent psychotherapy or Health Visiting plus evidence of continued professional development in a CAMHS related area
  • Evidence of professional registration and continued professional development
  • Educated to masters level or equivalent demonstrable experience.
Desirable criteria
  • Management qualification (MBA, DMS, NVQ Level 4, Care management)
  • Additional specialist post qualifications in parent infant mental health and child mental health and/or attachment

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Substantial experience of working with families with young children and infants presenting with emotional difficulties, mental health needs, including, family relationship problems.
  • Experience of assessing and intervening around child protection and vulnerable adult issues.
  • Managing a caseload and associated professional activities under supervision.
  • Experience of teaching and liaising with other professional groups suitable for presentations within public, professional and academic settings
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of attachment assessment, formulation and treatment of children and families across a range of care settings.

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of infant, child & adolescent development, adult mental health and of family functioning
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations and National Policies in relation to infants, young children and families, particularly during the perinatal period.
  • Knowledge of Child Safeguarding issues and familiarity with local and national child protection procedures.
  • Knowledge of assessment and care planning process and procedures in families with young children.
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of the theory and practice of specialist psychological therapies in working with infants, young children and families with attachment and/or mental health difficulties.
  • Knowledge and understanding the perinatal period and the impact on attachment and mental health during this period

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to work in partnership with service users, carers, colleagues and other agencies •
  • Ability to develop and deliver interventions both individually and systemically at various levels, including adapting communication to meet the needs of infants and young children, staff teams or carers as well as being able to write complex, highly technical reports to families and professional colleagues both within and outside the NHS and CSC.
  • Ability to identify and manage risk in individuals presenting with mental health needs
  • Ability to provide and receive complex sensitive or contentious information often within a hostile, antagonistic or highly emotive atmosphere.
  • Ability to work with families who are very resistant to change. Well developed skills in the ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing, complex, technical and sensitive information to young children, and families/carers and other professional colleagues both within and outside the NHS.
  • Confidence in the use of IT skills to be able to navigate and contribute to recording clinical work as well as providing reports for commissioners and managers.

  • Service development or project management skills
