Job overview

Manchester Local Care Organisation are looking to recruit an enthusiastic and compassionate Trainee Screening Technician with good communication skills to join the Greater Manchester, East Cheshire & Glossop Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Screening Programme (GMECAAASP) - a successful, innovative and friendly screening team, based at an agreed local AAA Screening venue closest to your home in Greater Manchester.

Applications are invited from both trainees and qualified AAA Screening Technicians.  Working to National and Local Protocols you will use/be trained to use ultrasound technology to detect Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) in men aged 65 years and over in order to save lives. 

Trainees will be offered formal training in AAA screening, including the use of ultrasound and all administration processes. This will lead towards qualifying with an eDiploma in Health Screening to confirm clinical competency as an independent AAA Screening Technician.

Main duties of the job

You will be required to work at multiple sites across the Greater Manchester, East Cheshire & Glossop regions, transporting necessary equipment to clinics. It is essential that you are able to travel independently to fulfil the requirements of the post. The ability to meet the travel requirements of the role are essential, therefore the post holder must have access to a car with business insurance and a clean driving license.

This is a AFC Band 4 role (Band 3 whilst training, Band 4 upon semi-independent accreditation) for 22.5 hours per week, flexibly worked Monday - Friday office hours with the occasional early evening or weekend.

Enhanced DBS is essential.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Educated to GCSE level with 5 grade ‘C’ or equivalent experience or qualifications.
  • Ongoing commitment to self-development training or education.

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Able to demonstrate an understanding of health improvement and the role of screening as part of the NHS.
  • Demonstrate ability to empathise, communicate sympathetically and sensitively with people and to have an understanding of the implications of working with people from different cultural backgrounds and ethnicity
Desirable criteria
  • Has an understanding of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of dealing with members of the public in a face-to-face role.
  • Experience of working unsupervised; being independently responsible for time management, able to achieve the objectives of the post and make correct decisions within a clear set of guidelines.
  • Able to demonstrate an understanding of administration practices and procedures in terms of accuracy and confidentiality.
  • Clear and concise verbal communication skills - experience of communicating unfamiliar and/or sensitive information
  • Basic keyboard skills and shows willingness to learn to use the relevant software.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience working in a health or social care setting running clinics or similar services
