Job overview

We are looking for an enthusiastic and hardworking Assistant Psychologist to work within our community mental health rehabilitation team The individual will work supporting individuals with long-term and complex mental health needs. It is an exciting opportunity for an individual who is interested in a career in Psychology to gain a broad range of skills and experiences within a diverse, dedicated and welcoming team.

Please note - This role is not eligible for sponsorship unless you meet criteria by temporary exemption from current changes to immigration rules put in force on 22/07/2025. Separate provisions are applied to workers who have been sponsored and held continuously Skilled Worker visa since prior to 04/04/2024.

 

Main duties of the job

The successful person will work as part of an established multi-disciplinary team. They will be required to undertake a range of activities under the guidance and supervision of a qualified Psychologist. These include assessments, direct clinical work (including individual, family and group work), report writing, attending meetings, assisting in projects and data collection.

Essential requirements for the post include: experience of working with people with complex mental health difficulties, an undergraduate degree in Psychology, a high level of communication skills, a good level of ability to engage hard-to-reach people, a capacity to work flexibly and productively in demanding environments and an ability to accept and use supervision appropriately.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • An upper second-class honours degree (or higher) in Psychology.
  • Entitlement to graduate membership of the British Psychological Society.
Desirable criteria
  • Further training in relevant areas of professional psychology e.g. Cognitive Therapy, Motivational Interviewing.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working with people with complex mental health difficulties
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working in an inpatient and/or rehabilitation setting.
  • Experience of working in the NHS.
  • Experience of work within a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Experience of working as an Assistant Psychologist.

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • An understanding of the needs and difficulties of people with severe and enduring mental health difficulties.
  • An understanding of psychology applied to healthcare.
Desirable criteria
  • An understanding of models and ideas of Recovery from mental health problems.

Skills

Essential criteria
  • High level of communication skills (written and verbal) and to interact effectively with staff from all disciplines.
  • Ability to communicate sensitive information to patients, carers and staff.
  • Highly developed engagement skills.
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Word, Access, Excel, Powerpoint.
  • High level ability to contain and work with organisational stress.
  • Ability to balance and respond to urgent or competing service demands and willingness to be flexible in managing own time in order to respond to service needs.

Other Requirements

Essential criteria
  • There is a requirement to travel mainly within the Manchester area and an occasional requirement to travel across the wide footprint of the Trust to attend meetings and events relevant to the role.
  • An ability to interact effectively with staff from all disciplines.
  • An ability to interact effectively with people with mental health difficulties.
  • Ability to accept and use supervision appropriately and effectively.
