A vacancy has arisen for a Consultant Cleft Surgeon within the Network. The appointee will be part of a team of four designated Consultant Cleft Surgeons – two based in Manchester and two in Liverpool. The appointee will provide diagnosis, treatment planning and surgery for children, young people and adults born with cleft lip and/or palate and non-cleft velopharyngeal incompetence. The appointee will also undertake Plastic Surgical sessions or Oral Maxilo Facial Surgery sessions dependent on specialty training . The post is also open to suitably experienced ENT surgeons at 7.5 Cleft PA with potential for subsequent job plan review yto incorporate additional ENT sessions. The post will be based at the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital (Manchester University Hospitals Foundation Trust).

Main duties of the job

The Consultant cleft Surgeon will provide treatment within the North West of England, Isle of Man and North Wales Cleft Lip and Palate Service working in conjunction with the other Cleft Surgeons as a single  team across the two main surgical centres. The post holder will contribute to the strategic development of the multidisciplinary cleft lip and palate team, participating in the development of Network guidelines, policies and protocols and liaising with other colleagues as required, including nursing, speech and language therapy, clinical psychology and consultant and trainee surgical, anaesthetic, orthodontic and paediatric dental colleagues throughout the Network. The postholder will also provide sessions to the Paediatric Plastic Surgery Service at RMCH and Wythenshawe Hospital or the Oral, Maxillo-Facial service at RMCH and MRI .

Person specification

Qualifications and Training

Essential criteria
  • Full registration with licence to practice with the United Kingdom General Medical Council (GMC)
  • On the GMC Specialist list for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Plastic Surgery or ENT Surgery or within 6 months of CCT and eligibility for inclusion at the time of interview
  • Intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship Exit Examination or equivalent in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Plastic Surgery or ENT Surgery
  • Successful completion of an SAC approved 5 year minimum training programme in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery or 6 year training program in Plastic Surgery or ENT Surgery or within 6 months of completion at the time of interview
  • A minimum of 12 months full time experience in a Cleft Training Interface Group Fellowship or equivalent at the time of interview
  • High level of clinical experience and competence in primary and secondary cleft lip and palate surgery including lip repair, palate repair, alveolar repair, speech surgery, cleft nasal surgery, multidisciplinary team working and engagement with the team approach to shared care

Teaching and Audit

Essential criteria
  • Experience of postgraduate and undergraduate teaching and training at an appropriate level
  • Effective participation in audit

Research

Essential criteria
  • Ability to appraise scientific literature critically
Desirable criteria
  • Publication in refereed journals
  • Research relevant to Cleft Surgery
