NHS AfC: Band 7
Job overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a trainee Clinical Perfusionist within a dynamic forward-thinking Perfusion Department.
Manchester Foundation Trust and Wythenshawe Hospital are at the cutting-edge of cardiac surgery. We provide all aspects of adult cardiac surgery including, ventricular assist devices (V.A.D.), heart and lung transplantation and respiratory extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation (E.C.M.O.). The suitable candidate will be friendly, dynamic and enthusiastic. In addition to this, the ability to work as part of a team, but also to thrive under the use of their own autonomy, is imperative. Furthermore, suitable candidates will shine under pressure and be able to focus for long periods of time, in stressful situations.
All applicants must possess a life science honours degree, with minimum 2.1, and be able to commit to an eventual departmental on-call rotation.
The successful candidate will be required to attend The University of Bristol for completion of a Perfusion Science (MSc). The MSc is carried out by completing one week blocks of study at Bristol University alongside 'hands on' practical training at Wythenshawe.
Applicants must be available to attend the each designated week of the MSc course.
Main duties of the job
The main duty of the role is the set up and running of the Heart Lung machine for cardiac surgery.
In addition the perfusion department is responsible for the cell salvage machines and Intra Aortic Balloon Pumps.
Wythenshawe is a transplant centre, and so the perfusion department uses mechanical circulatory support devices. These include ventricular assist devices, Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) and Heartmate 3.
Wythenshawe also provides a Veno-Veno Respiratory ECMO service and has the capacity to retrieve patients from 'outside' units.
