Job overview
This is a full time (10PA) Consultant Cytopathologist post at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust. The post will be based the Cytopathology Department at the Oxford Road campus reporting Diagnostic Cytopathology, and Cervical Cytology.
The 3 Oxford Road-based Consultant Cytopathologists, 1 Consultant Histopathologist/Cytopathologist, and 10 consultant BMS work in 2 subspecialist teams (Cervical and Diagnostic Cytopathology). This is a substantive post.
Main duties of the job
The appointee will, together with other consultant colleagues, be responsible for providing subspecialised cytopathology services for its clinical users (Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, Tameside & Glossop Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust, The Christie NHS Foundation Trust and local General Practices). This may include review of cytopathology of patients who are referred in to any of the Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust sites for further investigation or treatment from other hospitals. The appointee will participate in cancer multidisciplinary team meetings (MDTs) in line with their areas of subspecialisation.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Full and Specialist Registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) with a license to practice (or eligible for registration within 6 months of date of interview)
- If a newly qualified UK trainee the applicant must ALSO be a holder of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or within six months of award of CCT or equivalent by date of interview
- FRCPath or evidence of equivalent qualification
- FRCPath Part 2 exam which included cervical cytology or FRCPath Certificate of Higher Cervical Cytology Training
Desirable criteria
- MD or PhD Equivalent
Research
Essential criteria
- Ability to critically assess published research and incorporate it into clinical practice where appropriate
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of taking initiative & past participation in research
- Publications in peer reviewed journals
- Ideas for future research whilst in post
Clinical Experience
Essential criteria
- Ability to work as an independent practitioner in the subspecialty areas of the post
- Possess broad clinical experience in the general aspects of the post plus any specific experience required for the post
- Ability to work unsupervised at consultant level in subspecialty non- gynaecological cytopathology
Desirable criteria
- Ability to offer an experienced opinion in a subspecialty commensurate with the needs of the service
Competence and Clinical Skil
Essential criteria
- Ability to use a computer
- Understanding of laboratory protocols and evidence of adherence
Desirable criteria
- Ability to draw up laboratory protocols
- Reporting of cervical cytology under the NHSCSP with personal statistics within the national ranges
Teaching & Training
Essential criteria
- Experience of teaching medical students and junior doctors or other relevant professional groups.
- Willingness to participate in undergraduate education
Desirable criteria
- To have the ability and willingness to teach at all levels and to all groups of staff
- Experience of teaching trainees & lecturing
Continuous Professional Development
Essential criteria
- Evidence of participation in CME/CPD in the last 12 months
- Understanding of RCPath CPD requirements
Desirable criteria
- Maintenance of a CPD diary or RCPath portfolio
Management & Administration
Essential criteria
- Evidence of ability to work with management and previous experience of management groups
- Awareness of current issues and the wider context of laboratory practice in NHS
Desirable criteria
- Have attended, or be booked to attend a management course relevant to laboratory medicine
- Experience with service improvement methods and the ability to contribute managerially to service development.
- Experience in working in a Multidisciplinary Team for cancer care
Clinical Governance & Audit
Essential criteria
- Committed to and understands the principles of clinical governance and laboratory quality management
- Experience in performing clinical audit/laboratory function evaluation
Desirable criteria
- Active involvement in a clinical governance program
- Completion and publication of a substantive audit project or service improvement project
