Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Speciality Doctor to join the Emergency Department Team at North Manchester General Hospital, which is part of Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT). This position provides the opportunity to work at a high-performing Emergency Department that is ranked as the second-best adult ED in Greater Manchester and a leader in ambulance turnaround times. 

NMGH has a full Emergency Department, which includes an integrated paediatric emergency department, urgent treatment centre and co-located same day emergency care services.  It also offers a full range of general and acute surgical services and is the base for the region’s specialist infection disease unit and Maxillofacial surgery.

 The ED team consists of:

  • 16 Consultants:
    • 3 consultants dedicated exclusively to Paediatric Emergency Medicine.
  • 6 General practitioners
  • 14 Specialty Registrars and 3 Higher Specialty Trainees (HSTs).
  • A multidisciplinary team comprising:
    • Junior doctors (FY2, GPST, clinical fellows).
    • Advanced clinical Practitioners (ACPs).
    • Emergency Nurse practitioners (ENPs).
    • Dedicated pharmacist.
    • Dynamic nursing team

Main duties of the job

Key Responsibilities

1. The post holder will be clinically and educationally responsible to the Consultants in Emergency Medicine.

2. The clinical duties will comprise: -

·         Active participation in the reception, initial diagnosis, investigation and treatment of patients attending the Emergency Department.

·         Assessment and management of children and young people in the paediatric emergency department.

·         Electronically document notes to a good standard maintaining professional standards

·         Appropriately discuss and refer patients for inpatient assessment

·         Communicate with other community services such as General practitioners, hospital at home services or care home staff.

·         Refer to other clinics held within the hospital and the wider trust hospital services.

3. Provide support and supervision for resident doctors including FY2 grades, clinical fellows and GP trainees within the Emergency Department. This may take the form of advice regarding diagnosis and treatment or taking the lead of the shift out of hours as the Night EPIC depending on experience.

Person specification

Education/ Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Primary medical qualification (e.g. MBChB, ALS, ATLS, APLS - The appointee will hold one of the provider certificates or show evidence of equivalent training and experience
  • Full registration with the GMC with a Licence to practice.
  • Can show enthusiasm and participation in a local teaching programme Maintaining an up-to-date portfolio representing clinical progression
  • Hold full MRCEM
Desirable criteria
  • Made progress towards FRCEM examinations

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Completion of at least 5 years’ full time postgraduate training with a minimum of 2 years being in emergency medicine.
  • Have participated in a full audit cycle and understand the quality improvement framework
Desirable criteria
  • Have working in an NHS emergency department as at middle grade levelctive participation or leading on a quality improvement project with a multidisciplinary team Participated in research project

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work well within a team
  • Organisational and leadership skills
  • Clinical Governance understanding

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Broad knowledge of emergency medicine and paediatric medicine

Aptitudes

  • Residing, or prepared to reside within 30 minutes or 10 miles which is reasonable access to the Trust Hospitals
  • Appropriate Home Office status to undertake a career post in the UK
