Consultant in General Paediatrics

YC72

Job overview

The RMCH MCS oversees the delivery of paediatric services across Wythenshawe, Withington, Trafford and Altrincham sites. The main inpatient service is based at Wythenshawe hospital on the Starlight unit. The Starlight unit has 24 paediatric beds and 11 Paediatric observation and assessment beds (POAU) which are accessed by local GPs and Wythenshawe ED. The POAU is in operation 24x7. The unit also has 1 PHDU bed. The bed capacity is made up of several single cubicles and bays.

A Day Unit is available for children with 10 beds. A mobile vanguard theatre has also been commissioned to provide elective paediatric surgery. Elective paediatric surgery is provided for children over 6 months of age. There is an active play service and a school.  In the paediatric outpatient department, clinics are held by the paediatricians and surgeons along with several visiting specialists to provide a full range of clinics.

The unit is staffed by qualified Paediatric nurses and there are doctors (Tier 1 and 2) based on the unit 24/7. The Consultant paediatricians work a hot week rota and are available 08:30-17:00 during daytime hours and on an on-call basis overnight and at weekends. There is resident Consultant cover of POAU on most weekday evenings (5-8pm).

The MCS also has a small Day Case and out-patient unit on the Trafford Hospital site, which is a nurse led unit, but also has 10 day case beds which can accommodate minor day case surgery for children from 4 years and upwards.

Main duties of the job

The appointee will be contracted for an average of 10 programmed activities per week. Job plan will be agreed on commencement of post. It will include:

•    1 in 7 hot weeks and 1 in 7 on call with weekend in General paediatrics.
•    In ‘non hot weeks’ approx. 3 clinics a week: General paediatrics new & follow-up and special interest clinics.
•    1.5 for core CPD and any remaining SPA to contribute to activities of the department. You will be educational/ clinical supervisor around 2 trainees, contribute to induction and post graduate education, undergraduate education, governance activities, audit and research. A new Job planning framework has been agreed with LNC recently.

•    1 in 7 resident evenings till 8PM (Mon- Friday) as resident consultant for POAU & admissions.

This post is based at Wythenshawe hospital, thought there may be some expectations for clinics to be delivered at Trafford general hospital and there maybe be a need for cross site working in future if services are re-organised
