Applications are invited to join the Specialist Nurse for Organ Retrieval and Ventricular assist devices (VAD) Coordinator team at Wythenshawe Hospital. 

 

Main duties of the job

As part of the Organ retrieval service team, the post holder will help facilitate assessment, procurement, preservation and safe transfer of heart and lungs for transplantation.

As a Ventricular Assist Devices Coordinator, the post holder will  facilitate the care and education of patients supported with a Ventricular Assist Device and their families from initial contact, work-up for implant, peri-operative period and long-term follow-up, maintaining excellent care across the VAD/Transplant continuum. VAD Coordinators also participate in patient and caregiver education, providing educational/outreach support regarding VAD to health care providers, patient groups, community organizations, and others in the hospital's service area.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse and NMC registration
  • Teaching/ assessor certificate or equivalent
  • Post registration training
Desirable criteria
  • Degree
  • Relevant postgraduate course
  • Non Medical prescribing

Experience

Essential criteria
  • minimum 3 years’ experience at band 5 in ITU/ Cardiothoracic/ Cardiology
  • Experience of working as part of a multi-disciplinary team
Desirable criteria
  • Experience working with patients following Heart and Lung Transplant and short and long term mechanical circulatory support devices
  • Involvement with audit and research

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to work unsupervised. Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to organise, prioritise and delegate within a MDT
  • Good time management skills
Desirable criteria
  • Presentation skills, Competent I.T. skills
  • Good analytical and problem solving skills – clinical reasoning

The Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust at Wythenshawe Hospital provides district general hospital services for its local communities and many specialist tertiary services for Greater Manchester and the whole of the North West. Our specialist tertiary services include cardiology and cardiac surgery, thoracic surgery, heart and lung transplantation, complex respiratory services, vascular services, burns care and plastic surgery, cancer services and breast care. The Transplant Unit at Manchester University Hospitals (south site) is one of five designated Heart Lung centers in England, with its own dedicated transplant facility. The Unit has close links with the North West Lung Centre and the Cardiology Department, and is part of the cardiothoracic surgical service at Wythenshawe Hospital. Each year the unit performs approximately 50 to 60 transplants encompassing the full range of adult cardiothoracic transplantation including hearts, heart/lungs, single lungs and sequential double lung transplants. The unit is known nationally for its excellent survival statistics for both heart transplantation and VAD implants.
