Job overview

The NHS GMS will have a critical role in facilitating strong collaborations across large geographies, working with all healthcare providers, patients and the public to build trust in genomics, and providing clinical leadership to enable the multi-professional workforce to use genomics safely, effectively and efficiently.

Potential improvements in care for patients include effective, quicker diagnosis of rare conditions, personalising treatments and care for patients with inherited conditions and cancer, and a better understanding of the underlying cause of many conditions.  The NHS GMS will work to uniform standards and a national test directory, and the Alliances will help embed this new technology, reduce unwarranted variation with commitments to make demonstrable improvements to outcomes for our patients and the populations we serve.

Our focus is to create a system of continuous improvement in health and care, not just treating illness, with the ability to predict accurately disease and tailor treatments.  However, it will only be possible to secure the benefits if everyone, including patients, the whole multi-professional team across the care system – doctors, nurses, midwifes, allied health professionals, healthcare scientists, pharmacists – and academics are able to actively contribute and make this vision a reality.

Main duties of the job

The Lead Pharmacist, as an expert in Genomic Medicine, provides a dynamic link between the emerging clinical practice and service developments for Genomic Medicine by creating new models for delivering patient care thereby ensuring the best experience and outcomes for patients from their medicines whenever and wherever their care is delivered.  The role will provide visible leadership across the profession, monitoring and maintaining professional high standards.

You will be an innovative and dynamic practitioner committed to providing highly specialist pharmacy services and expert practice relevant to genomics in accordance with UK Medicines legislation, the Code of Ethics of the General Pharmaceutical Council, the Royal Pharmaceutical Society standards and Trust policies and procedures.

You will set clear expectations and lead the delivery of genomic objectives set by the North West Genomic Medicine Service Alliance (NWGMSA) and will demonstrate a strong commitment to delivering a world-class service for patients and their families.  You will be sought as an opinion leader regarding pharmaceutical care across Genomic Medicine and contribute to the national pharmacy genomics collaborative.
