Job overview

The post holder will work with the Smoke free pregnancy specialist midwife and other team members in providing individualised stop smoking support to women and families in a flexible and innovative way. 

Main duties of the job

  • Plan and deliver stop smoking advice and support sessions, including advice on stop smoking medications, working within recommended protocols and guidelines. This involves face to face, telephone and virtual appointments in a variety of settings and venues including home visits and working cross site within MFT.
  • Support a caseload of patients and develop individually tailored support plans including recommending treatments based on assessed needs.
  • Provide general health, lifestyle advice and support to people using the service e.g., healthy eating, physical activity, stress management. Signposting and referring to other health, community, and voluntary services when required.
  • Participate in educating pregnant women about the benefits of stopping smoking in pregnancy and support those women wanting to quit. Promote smoke free homes and support and advise women and families about secondhand smoke.
  • Have an extensive knowledge of the risks of smoking in pregnancy and be able to relay this information to women to enable them to make an informed decision about their care.
  • Excellent communication, listening and persuasive skills are valued along with a positive attitude towards change and maintaining a relationship with sometimes difficult or reluctant to engage clients.
  • Deliver Carbon Monoxide (CO) monitoring to a high standard and support CO screening in clinical practice as per CNST requirements.
  • Travel between hospital sites within MFT is expected and to carry out home visits.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • NVQ level 3 or equivalent health related studies OR substantial successful experience delivering stop smoking interventions/support and the completion of appropriate short courses for example NCSCT
  • GCSE level English and Mathematics or equivalent.
  • smoking cessation Advisor Intermediate level qualification (practitioner training, NCSCT training).

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • good level of understanding of evidence-based practice in relation to smoking cessation, the consequences of smoking in pregnancy and benefits to quitting.
  • An understanding of human behaviour in relation to making healthy lifestyle changes and decisions
  • Evidence of continual personal and professional development.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of providing healthcare advice or promoting healthy lifestyle advice to patients or members of the public.
  • Experience of providing help, support and/or counselling on either a one-to-one basis or as part of a group setting.
  • Experience of providing smoking cessation support.
  • Experience of working with pregnant women.
Desirable criteria
  • xperience of developing and delivering successful health promotion interventions.
