Job overview
Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital (RMCH) is the largest tertiary Paediatric Hospital in the UK. The successful candidate would be joining a department of 42 Consultant Paediatric Anaesthetists delivering sessions across RMCH, The Christie Hospital (the largest single site cancer centre in Europe, which includes anaesthetic services for the proton beam therapy centre), Trafford Hospital and Wythenshawe hospital.
The department provides anaesthesia for a wide range of paediatric surgical specialities including neurosurgery, complex airway, hyperinsulinism, palatofacial surgery, burn injury, paediatric urology including bladder exstrophy, renal transplant surgery and neonatal surgery.
The post attracts 10 PAs . The job plan may include sessions at any of the hospitals mentioned above (RMCH, the Christie Hospital, Trafford Hospital and Wythenshawe hospital. Weekend elective work may be required in the future.
Candidates should demonstrate proven experience in Paediatric anaesthetics.
Main duties of the job
The new consultant will provide anaesthesia for the services provided by the hospitals: Vide Infra for contractual commitment. Provision of services, including a 1 in 15 on-call rota, will be shared with other consultant anaesthetists at the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital.
The appointee will be contracted for a 10 PA job, made up of 8 direct clinical care PAs and 2 supporting PA for teaching, audit, CME/CPD, mandatory training, clinical governance and other administrative duties.
The job plan is flexible to meet the needs of the service. The job plan January 2023 attached is an example and the exact timings of clinical sessions to be agreed through discussion and agreement with the CSU Clinical Lead dependant on service demands.
The clinical commitment will consist of a variety of surgical specialities and the appointee would be expected to work at RMCH and all its affiliated sites and to cover for colleagues annual, study and sick leave.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Full registration with the GMC with licence to practise
- FRCA or equivalent Diploma
- Significant experience in anaesthesia
- Experience of working in the NHS
Desirable criteria
- Additional degree or postgraduate qualification (MRCP, MD etc)
- Post-Graduate Prizes
Clinical Skills & Training
Essential criteria
- Smooth progression through training consistent with personal circumstances
- Advanced training in paediatric anaesthesia or demonstrable experience
- APLS or equivalent
Desirable criteria
- Tertiary Paediatric Anaesthesia experience or training
- Relevant medical experience outside anaesthesia
- ATLS
Teaching Experience
Essential criteria
- Active regular participation in teaching and training of medical and para-medical colleagues
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of achieving GMC standards to be recognised as an Educational Supervisor
- Extensive / formal experience in medical education including regional teaching
- Life support course instructor
Clinical governance
Essential criteria
- Active consistent engagement with clinical audit

Desirable criteria
