Main duties of the job

The Nursing Assistant supports the delivery of specialist renal care across both the ward and community settings. The role involves assisting with invasive procedures, providing post-procedure monitoring, and supporting home-based peritoneal dialysis patients.

Procedural Support

The Nursing Assistant will assist registered nurses and medical staff with:

  • Renal biopsies

  • Peritoneal Dialysis (PD) catheter insertions

  • Haemodialysis line insertions

Duties include:

  • Preparing equipment and procedure areas

  • Supporting patient positioning and comfort

  • Maintaining infection prevention standards

  • Assisting during procedures

Post-Procedure Care

Following renal biopsies, PD catheter insertions, and haemodialysis line insertions, the Nursing Assistant will:

  • Closely monitor vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, oxygen saturation, temperature)

  • Observe for bleeding or procedural complications

  • Escalate concerns promptly to the registered nurse

  • Provide reassurance and patient support

  • Assist with documentation

This role is critical in ensuring early identification of complications and maintaining patient safety.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Holds National Care Certificate or be willing to undertake and complete within 12 weeks of starting.
  • Level 2 Apprenticeship in health care OR Gain equivalent knowledge and skill undertaking the Trust Clinical Support Worker Development Programme.
  • Holds Functional Skills Level 1 Maths and English or education equivalent.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience working in a healthcare, social care organisation/setting or service industry requiring people contact.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working within a health care environment.
