Job overview
The Senior Biomedical Scientist / Clinical Andrologist has shared responsibility for the operation of the Andrology laboratory
and the supervision of biomedical scientists, clinical scientists, associate practitioners and biomedical support workers. The post-holder has responsibility for ensuring the timely processing of workload, stock
control and assets management and is expected to deputise for the Chief Biomedical Scientist.
The Quality Manager will be a key member of Andrology and will be responsible for developing and applying a quality management system within the Laboratory, in accordance with ISO 15189. The
post holder is expected to deputise for the Reproductive Science Quality Manager (ISO 17043).
Quality Management involves coordinating activities required to direct and control an organisation with regard to quality. The post holder will manage the quality system with the objective that the department
becomes progressively more effective in quality.
The post-holder is expected to apply scientific knowledge, skill and expertise at the required professional level for the full range of Andrology procedures, providing a high quality service to patients. This level of
responsibility is particularly important in Andrology where decisions may be made independently without the opportunity to refer to more senior staff. This post has direct clinical responsibilities for patient care
through the provision of diagnostic services.
Main duties of the job
The job includes (although details are found in the JD/PS):
To ensure compliance with national and international standards and legislation; ISO 15189
To deputise for the UK NEQAS RS Quality manager to ensure compliance with national and international standards and legislation; 17043
To act within the policies and standard operating procedures of the laboratory.
To define operating procedures within the laboratory in conjunction with other staff
Undertake Clinical Andrology activity
Support HR and Management activities in Andrology

Person specification
PS
Essential criteria
- Registration with Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) as a Biomedical or Clinical Scientist.
- MSc or equivalent.
- Quality management qualification or equivalent experience.
- IBMS Specialist Diploma in Andrology or equivalent experience/qualification.
- Experience of working in a medical laboratory, sufficient to convey a high level of professional experience in Andrology/Cellular Science.
- Experience in staff management and leadership of small groups.
- Able to use laboratory equipment, including a microscope, pipettes, air flow cabinets etc.,
- Detailed knowledge of BS EN ISO 15189, 17043, audit and quality management systems (QMS’s).
- Evidence of on-going CPD.
- Detailed knowledge and experience of all Andrology technical procedures, data management and analysis.
Desirable criteria
- A good knowledge of infertility and the range of therapeutic treatment options
- Level 1& 2 counselling
- Able to counsel and consent patients who may be upset, embarrassed and/or gravely ill who attend the department for semen banking.
