Job overview
Working in a busy Urology department you will provide a comprehensive administrative and secretarial service to one or more members of the Consultant Medical staff and their unit or team.
You will make sure that clinics are fully utilised with the appropriate patients and manage the consultants new and follow up waiting lists.
You will also be responsible for theatre scheduling and making sure that theatres are also fully utilised.
Main duties of the job
Take messages and telephone calls from patients and staff and deal with their inquiries, referring on where necessary.
Prioritise and allocate work resulting from opening and actioning of mail
Manage Consultant’s electronic diary, providing accurate planning of meetings, Consultant’s activity, study leave etc
Close liaison with Consultant, General Practitioner and other Health Professionals.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Educated to GCSE standard in core subjects - English and Maths
Desirable criteria
- Medical Secretary BSMS/AMSPAR
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Knowledge of Patient Access targets, eg, 18 week RTT pathway
- Knowledge of medical terminology
Experience and Skills
Essential criteria
- Experience as a Medical Secretary or comparable experience in other background
- Good communication skills – ability to communicate effectively with patients, other administrators and healthcare professionals both verbal and written
- Able to take direction but also work using initiative
- Ability to work to deadlines
- Ability to work as part of a team to achieve team goals
- Experience of Information Technology systems, specifically Microsoft Office package including Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook
Desirable criteria
- Experience of managing waiting lists within targets, eg, RTT
- Previous experience using hospital administration systems, eg, Hive system
Applicant requirements
The postholder will have access to vulnerable people in the course of their normal duties and as such this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
