This is a consultant haematologist post working in laboratory diagnostics for the regional haemato-oncology diagnostic service. The post holder will be expected to be proficient at reporting blood films, bone marrow aspirates and cytospin to a high level. Teaching and training of medical students, post graduate doctors and BMS team members will be expected.

Main duties of the job

This post is for a Consultant Haematologist in the laboratory haematology team as part of Clinical Scientific services (CSS). The post holder will work primarily as part of the Haematology Cancer Diagnostics Partnership (HCDP) team. This team supports the regional haematology malignancy diagnostics service, providing integrated reports that meet the requirements of the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) Improving Outcomes Guidance (NG42).

 

The HCDP service is delivered by two Hospital Trusts (MFT Lead Provider) and Christie Foundation Trust (Key Provider for Lymphoma Diagnosis). The HCDP post is sited solely in MFT and additionally includes clinical roles at that hospital. The HCDP presently provides integrated reports for haemato-oncology samples for the hospitals in Manchester with the final hospital due to join in the next few months. The post-holder will also provide on-call provision covering emergency diagnostic input for urgent samples received by the regional HCDP service (1:5 weekends and Bank Holidays).

  • The post holder will work closely with the five other consultants who work within the HCDP morphology team and will also work closely with the members of the histopathology team who support HCDP and members of molecular, flow cytometry and cytogenetic departments.
