Job overview

As a TCP dispenser you will be working in both the inpatient dispensary and the new outpatient dispensary.

Our dispenser team are a vital component for delivering a high quality service to patients and Trust colleagues. The applicant most have experience of working in a busy dispensing environment.

The complex medicines prescribed and treatment regimes seen as routine within the hospital are very different from those that would be encountered in a community pharmacy but all new dispensers follow a structured six month induction programme, supported by a mentor and nominated pharmacist.

When completed the dispenser will be confident in the operation of automated dispensing robots, the compilation of complex treatment therapies for inpatients and outpatients, assembly of discharge prescriptions, stock supply to wards and peripheral clinics.

Main duties of the job

  • Ensure excellent patient care and customer service is provided at all times.
  • Ensure waiting times for customers are kept within agreed Key Performance Indicators
  • Work as a team player with all colleagues within the pharmacy.  Share your knowledge and skills, be flexible and willing to help your colleagues
  • Receive and check prescriptions directly from patients and carers
  • Accurately log the prescription onto the prescription tracking system
  • Accurately dispense under the supervision of the Responsible Pharmacist at the time, checking that all legal requirements are met
  • Be compliant, and act within, the pharmacy Standard Operating Procedures, clinical guidance and training provided

The Christie NHS Foundation Trust manages the Christie Hospital which is one of the largest cancer treatment centres in Europe. The Christie treats 40,000 patients per year, delivering 30,000 chemotherapy treatments and was rated as ‘excellent’ by the CQC in 2018.

The Christie Pharmacy Ltd (TCP), created December 2017, is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Trust and provides pharmacy services to outpatients, inpatients and over fifteen peripheral clinics.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Take personal responsibility to understand the Trust and TCP policies

Assist with the training of other colleagues within the team

Receive and check prescriptions directly from patients and carers

Accurately log the prescription onto the prescription tracking system

Accurately dispense under the supervision of the Responsible Pharmacist at the time, checking that all legal requirements are met

Be compliant, and act within, the pharmacy Standard Operating Procedures, clinical guidance and training provided

Record dispensing interventions on Trust systems in a timely manner

Record dispensing incidents and ‘near miss’ incidents according to procedural policy

Take responsibility to ensure the area you are working in is safe

As the company develops you may be required to undertake training in order to upskill
