Locum Consultant Hand Surgeon

NHS Medical & Dental: Consultant

Job overview

An opportunity has arisen for a Locum Consultant Hand Surgeon to join the Northern Care Alliance as part of an integrated orthoplastic hand surgery network.

The role offers a combination of elective and trauma hand surgery within a collaborative, cross-site model. Elective surgery is delivered through a dedicated NCA hand surgery hub, working alongside all hand surgeon colleagues across the organisation within a shared operating and clinical pathway. This provides a high-quality, team-based elective environment with consistency of practice and peer support.

The post holder will be primarily responsible for trauma and acute hand surgery at Oldham, alongside outpatient and inpatient care. This is a busy district general hospital service with a broad case mix and significant clinical responsibility.

Main duties of the job

The hand surgery service operates as a single clinical network across the Northern Care Alliance, comprising a team of nine consultant hand surgeons working across sites. The post holder will work closely with colleagues across the network and participate in a weekly NCA-wide hand MDT, supporting collective decision-making and maintaining high clinical standards.

The service is led from Salford Royal Hospital and delivers comprehensive adult hand surgery across the full spectrum. This includes orthoplastic major trauma care, microsurgical services including replantation and revascularisation, peripheral nerve and brachial plexus surgery, complex wrist pathology, inflammatory conditions such as scleroderma, arthroplasty, and reconstructive procedures.

The post holder will have the opportunity to link into these specialist services through MDT discussion, shared pathways, and collaborative operating where appropriate, including management of selected complex cases within the elective hub alongside specialist colleagues.

The role will include outpatient clinics, operating lists, and inpatient care, with opportunities to contribute to teaching, audit, research, and ongoing service development across the wider network.
