Job overview

An opportunity is available in the Urology department at The Royal Oldham Hospital for an experienced doctor who can provide demonstrable expertise in Urology to deliver a high-quality independent service and manage complex cases with reference to a consultant. This post is for 12 months initially. 

The successful post holder will be based at The Royal Oldham Hospital (elective in-patients and on-call) with clinical commitments at Rochdale Infirmary (day case and diagnostics).  Outpatients’ clinics are delivered across Oldham, Rochdale and Fairfield sites. 

The Urology Directorate provides an acute urology service as well as inpatient and day case elective surgery on the Royal Oldham site. The Urology Service at NCA East has 18 inpatient beds at the Royal Oldham site on Ward T6 (emergencies) and F12 (electives).

Main duties of the job

The post holder with be responsible, under the supervision of the consultant, for the day-to-day care of elective and emergency patients. You will be expected to play a full part in the relevant departmental rota at the Royal Oldham Hospital.

The post holder will work and liaise with the colleagues across the multidisciplinary team to ensure an appropriate, professional and timely provision of care to patients. 

Opportunities to work with a consultant will be provided to ensure on-going requirements for professional development and education. Robust medical revalidation and appraisal systems exist across the Northern Care Alliance, through which you will be allocated an appraiser and undertake an annual appraisal.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will be required to

  • Contribute to both undergraduate and postgraduate training and will be expected to create conditions that enhance training opportunities, adhering to national and local recommendations stemming from MMC and related requirements.
  • To assist and participate with the development of postgraduate training for F1s, F2s, and other staff as appropriate. 
  • To promote evidence-based practice. 
  • To respond appropriately to NICE guidance.  To change own and others clinical practice in response to new clinical developments
  • To be involved in risk management and quality assurance
  • To remain up to date and engaged in CME/CPD as per RCP guidelines.
  • To respond appropriately to complaints and critical incidents
  • The post holder will be expected to take part in developing clinical audit in accordance with agreed Directorate and Corporate Clinical Governance programmes. 
  • To undertake all work in accordance with the NCA procedures and operating policies.
  • To attend accredited conferences and meetings to update personal level of clinical practice, teaching and management skills in line with CME/CPD requirements.
  • To participate in an annual Job Planning Review process
  • To participate in the Trust’s annual Appraisal process and to respond to any identified development needs.
  • To support the clinical decision making of junior medical and nursing staff
  • To carry out ward rounds
  • To carry out hot week and in reach services to ensure that all our patients have a timely senior review and management plan.
  • To participate in an out of hours on call rota and 7-day ward review's
  • Participate in a rota which triages urgent and routine referrals to maximise outpatient capacity.
  • To adhere to the Trust’s Adverse Clinical Incident Policy.

Registration and qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Full registration with the General Medical Council & a valid Licence to Practise with the General Medical Council (or demonstrates eligibility to apply for registration and license)
  • Primary medical qualification (eg. MBChB)

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Minimum 4 years full time postgraduate training (or equivalent) gained on a part time or flexible basis, or as a Fixed Term Specialty Trainee; or shall have equivalent experience and competencies as a Fixed Term Specialty Trainee; at least two years should have been spent in Urology
  • Relevant specialty clinical knowledge & training as per The British Association of Urological Surgeons.
  • Research Skills: Demonstrates understanding of the basic principles of research Experience of active involvement in Audit (clear description, outcomes & appropriate experience for level of application)
Desirable criteria
  • Attainment or working toward MD in PHD or equivalent
  • Adult life support provider (APLS/PiLS)
  • Evidence of relevant peer reviewed papers and other publications (e.g. book chapter, book editor, case report – not abstracts or letters)
  • Presentations (oral or poster) at international, national or regional meetings – not local meetings
  • Relevant contribution to management Within Urology (rotas, committees etc)
  • Teaching achievement (including attendance at teaching courses, etc)

Communication

Essential criteria
  • Is empathetic and sensitive to patients needs
  • Able to explain things clearly – particularly complex or sensitive information
  • Is able to influence and persuade effectively
  • demonstrable skills in written and spoken English that are adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues which could be demonstrated by one of the following: • that applicants have undertaken undergraduate medical training in English; or • have the following scores in the academic international English Language Testing System (IELTS) – Overall 7, Speaking 7, Listening 6, Reading 6, Writing 6. • Occupational English Test (OET) certificate it must show: • you took the medicine version of the test • you got at least a grade ‘B’ in each testing area (speaking, listening, reading and writing)
  • If applicants believe that they have adequate communication skills but do not fit into one of the above examples they need to provide evidence.
  • Demonstrable skills in listening, reading, writing and speaking in English that enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues, as set out in the GMC’s Good Medical Practice (2013)
  • Excellent written & verbal communication skills in order to be able to write & present reports at board level
