This is a substantive post for which 10 PA’s are available.

This post would provide consultant psychiatric input to the team for the 10 PAs (6 PA’s GMAIC, 4 PA’s Crisis service) across the week. Out of hours, the consultant input comes from the medical on call rota. The post holder will join a dynamic and supportive Directorate and CAMHS Consultant peer group.

 

·       This is a new post, and the successful candidate will develop the role with the acute care team and liaise with the community CAMHS and inpatient services collaboratively. 

Main duties of the job

Role Summary:

The consultant psychiatrist will provide medical oversight within which they will provide clinical consultation to the Crisis team and GMAIC for assessment, management and treatment of the young people who present with mental health disorder. 

·       They will join the team and contribute to face to face assessments for complex, uncertain and significant risk presentations including YP requiring assessment under the framework of the mental health act and inform clinical judgments on appropriateness and suitability for admission to inpatient services. Where this not deemed to be clinically required or appropriate, they will provide guidance and make alternate recommendations including on the use of crisis services and offer follow up. 

·        They will provide supervision to NMP within Crisis and GMAIC service.

·       The role will encompass collective working and strengthened relationships with community CAMHS and inpatients in Pennine and CAMHS services across Greater Manchester.

·       They will collectively work with adult mental services for transition of YP reaching 18 and require ongoing care.

·       They will liaise with Inpatient services, attend escalation meetings and provide second opinion to neighboring GMAIC teams when required.

·       A pivotal role is the need for excellent communication and liaison with key professionals providing an interface between community and inpatient services.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Key clinical Responsibilities of the Post:                                      

PRINCIPAL DUTIES OF THE POST

 

Clinical

 

  • To take clinical responsibility for young people who are open to the crisis service and GMAIC and require medical input.

 

  • To lead the clinical team in acute care service, providing emergency, urgent and elective multi-disciplinary assessment and treatment for young people who present with emotional and mental health crisis.

 

  • Working with the multidisciplinary team, provide comprehensive psychosocial multiaxial diagnostic assessment; formulation and management; assessment of psychiatric and psychological comorbidity; care of comorbid physical health needs; psychoeducation; psychopharmacological interventions and management.

 

·       To provide consultation to referrals from community CAMHS services and other mental health services, paediatric ward, liaison services pertaining to young people with complex mental health care needs for those who require acute care specialist medical input in assessment and management including risk formulation. Case load responsibility for those who require consultant input

 

  • To provide consultation to community CAMHS on gatekeeping assessments led by GMAIC which help determine suitability and appropriateness of inpatient services. To utilise the legal framework such as The Mental Health Act, The Children Act and The Mental Capacity Act when required.

 

  • To adhere to the policies and procedures in support of the caseload, maintaining appropriate clinical records, confidentiality and administration. 

 

  • To work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team, participating in and helping to lead in management of referrals, assessment and treatment, follow up reviews and discharge. To provide effective handover to borough mental health teams and Local Authorities, and updates for commissioners.

 

 

  • To work in partnership with other professionals/agencies involved in the care of young people, across departmental and organisational boundaries.

 

·       To provide medical consultation and advice to clinical staff within acute care pathways. To contribute to the clinical supervision of other practitioners within this pathway.

 

  • To lead in the areas of medical practice in particular, and mental health practice in general using a clinical governance framework.

 

 

  • To provide mutual prospective consultant leave cover for medical colleagues in inpatient and day service.

 

The Trust would support clinical practice development through teaching or research within the field of child and Adolescent Psychiatry

Educational Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC Registration
Desirable criteria
  • Published research MRCPsych

Professional/Occupational Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Possession of CCT in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, or be within 6 months of achieving this or entered on the GMC Specialist Register
  • Section 12 Approval under Mental Health Act 183, or be eligible for approval.
  • Demonstrable competency across the PMETB approved curriculum for higher training in Child and Adolescent psychiatry
  • Registered for CPD with the RCPsych
Desirable criteria
  • Other postgraduate degrees e.g. MSc, MD etc
  • Experience in the use of the Mental Health Act (1983)
  • Area of special interest and expertise.
