Technical Instructor Post at Orchard House Day Hospital in Oldham
As a Technical Instructor you will be working alongside Occupational Therapists in a multi-disciplinary team working with Older people with mental health problems which are seriously impacting on the quality of their lives. You will be supporting patients throughout the day both in group settings and individually, both practically and emotionally.
You will be working with the team to promote good mental health in a range of group activities with patients who have functional mental health problems such as Psychosis, Bi -polar, Depression and Anxiety but not people with dementia
Our team comprises of OT's, Nurses, Technical Instructors, Nursing Assistant, Support Worker and Admin Support.
This is a part time post - 22.5 hours - worked over Three full days. 08.15 am until 16.15
The service works Monday to Friday and does not cover weekends or Bank Holidays.
Main duties of the job
Under the direction of a registered Occupational Therapist the post holder will be expected to:
• Deliver and implement planned and prescribed OT assessment, interventions, treatment programmes, group activities and care packages, within a structured OT model, under the direction of a registered Occupational Therapist, but without direct supervision.
• Work as an integrated member of the MDT.
• Follow the OT Process of Assessment/Planning/Intervention/Evaluation within the
OT framework and the Model of Human Occupation, (MOHO), with regular senior OT supervision.
• Contribute to MDT assessments and OT assessments that measure clinical outcomes
Work within Mental Health Service for Older People, to support OT interventions for service users who have complex and challenging needs.
• Receive clinical and professional supervision from Registered OT
• To be involved in a rota to serve lunches and drinks to patients as part of their therapeutic day
• To carry out administrative duties as required.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Clinical Duties and Care
• To implement care packages, care programmes and treatment plans within an
occupational therapy framework (MOHO/Social Inclusion Model) that are
supervised and established by a qualified OT
• To contribute to team evaluation of interventions.
• To contribute to the evaluation of OT outcomes of OT care packages, using OT
assessments available within the model.
• Use activity to motivate and engage service users therapeutically.
• To adapt and influence the therapeutic environment according to the service
users’ needs, in order to bring about conditions for change, engagement,
participation and inclusion, in accordance with assessed medical and mental
health needs.
• Jointly develop and independently deliver group and individual therapies and
occupational activity, within a treatment context.
• Deliver group programmes that address service users’ needs within the following
domains: social, educational, leisure, physical health and well-being, creative,
cognitive and social inclusion.
• In regular supervision sessions, evaluate outcomes of therapeutic interventions,
and treatment activities.
• To assist the OT, promote independence and enablement within individually
designed daily living and daily occupation programmes.
• To participate in handovers, staff meetings, client reviews, ward rounds and case
conferences.
• Participate in the Care Programme Approach and clustering.
• Focus on key areas of occupational engagement functioning and work to improve
motivation for occupation, pattern of occupation, communication, environment,
motor skills and process skills, and contribute to the clinical development of
treatment accordingly.

Essential criteria
- Technical qualifications, e.g. City & Guilds, or NVQ3 in Health & Social Care or equivalent technical / life skills gained through work or personal experience.

- Experience of working with people with functional and organic mental health problems in older age.
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Interest and the ability to learn, practice and apply the role of Occupational Therapy TI with older age clients with mental health needs.
- Knowledge of wide range of therapeutic activity for clients in older age with mental health needs.
- Keen interest in working with older people in a mental health setting
- Knowledge of dementia and the impact of the condition on functioning
- Knowledge of the physical limitations of aging
- Health / Safety and Risk awareness
Skills and Abilities
Essential criteria
- Knowledge of organic and functional illness
- Knowledge of MOHO (Model of Human Occupation).
- Knowledge of the impact of physical health needs on the mental health of people in older age.
- A comprehensive knowledge of a wide range of therapeutic activity and the role of OT for older people with mental health needs.
Work Related Circumstances

- Willingness to work flexibly.
- Use of a car or access to a means of mobility to travel across the Trust footprint in line with service needs
- Willing to carry out all duties and responsibilities of the post in accordance with the Trust’s Equal Opportunities and Equality and Diversity policies
- Appointments to regulated and controlled activities require an enhanced DBS disclosure.
