Job overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Assistant Psychologist to join our Clinical Health Psychology Department as part of the Northern Care Alliance. The role is based at Salford Royal Hospital.
The Assistant Psychologist will support the team in the provision of psychological care to patients/clients across a number of different specialist teams within the Clinical Health Psychology Department (including but not limited to: Gastro, Renal, Weight Management, CFS and Long Covid).
This post will mainly involve supporting the work of the Gastrointestinal and Renal psychology services and involve working alongside our Expert by Experience Patient Group. There may be scope for gaining experience in other specialities within the wider Clinical Health Psychology Department.
All work will be carried out under the supervision of a qualified Clinical Psychologist and will involve assessment, intervention, and indirect methods of working such as teaching/training.
The post holder will also assist in clinically related administration, audit and research as well as playing a significant role in supporting the work of the Departments Expert by Experience Patient Group (EEPG).
The successful candidate will be well supported by qualified colleagues as well as having good access to peer support with other Assistant Psychologists working for the NCA.
Main duties of the job
- Work with patients suffering from a range of medical/surgical conditions as part of the clinical health psychology team
- A range of activities including providing psychological therapy for patients, co-facilitating psycho-educational groups, data analysis, literature reviews, data collection and audit.

Registration / Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Honours degree in Psychology with 2:1 minimum.
Desirable criteria
- Further post graduate training in relevant areas of professional psychology, mental health practice and/or research design or analysis.
Knowledge, Skills & Experience
Essential criteria
- Contact with people with psychological and/or physical health problems.
- Understanding of the needs and difficulties of people with psychological difficulties and/or other physical health problems.
- A good knowledge of lifespan psychology applied to healthcare.
- Experience of using IT software e.g.Excel for databases or data analysis.
- Previous experience as an Assistant Psychologist
Desirable criteria
- Experience of those with psychological and physical health difficulties.
