Job overview
We are looking for an exceptional individual to join our busy and highly regarded service, supporting the continued delivery of high-quality, patient-centred care. The successful candidate will contribute to the development and delivery of the neurosurgical spinal service and will play an active role in the wider clinical, educational, governance and leadership activities of the department.
Applicants should demonstrate excellent clinical expertise, strong leadership qualities, effective communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team. Drive, flexibility and a commitment to team working are essential.
Candidates must be on the GMC Specialist Register or be a Specialist Registrar within six months of their expected CCT/CCST date at the time of interview.
Prospective candidates are expected to have completed a formal fellowship in Complex Spine Surgery at a recognised institution, or be able to demonstrate equivalent specialist training and experience in this field.
Main duties of the job
The Department of Neurosurgery at Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust is one of the busiest in the United Kingdom, with outstanding clinical care given to patients across the range of neurosurgical sub specialties. The department has a high throughput of complex and non-complex work covering the vascular, skull base, functional, oncology and spinal specialties. Salford Royal has recently been granted accreditation as Surgical Spine Centre of Excellence by Eurospine.
This post will augment the existing neurosurgical department, which is made up of 23 Consultant Neurosurgeons, 5 Specialty Doctors, Specialist Registrars, Junior Doctors and Allied Healthcare Professionals.
This new post is to facilitate the development of the Complex Spinal Surgery services in the region. Salford Royal has a large and expanding Complex Spinal Surgery department and the successful applicant will become a key member of this service.
The Neurosurgical department has recently begun operating at the NCAs GIRFT accredited surgical hub(s). The applicant will be expected to support the department’s development of this service.
On call responsibility is for a region of 3.3 million for cranial and general neurosurgical emergencies. There is a separate Spinal on call rota.
It is expected that the successful candidate will support the on-going development of the Neurosurgery Department, supporting with Service Improvement as appropriate.

Registration/Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Full registration with the General Medical Council
- FRCS or equivalent
- Completion of CCST/ higher specialist training or equivalent
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of Accredited Clinical & Educational Supervision of Medical Learners
- Inclusion on the specialist register / Admission to the register within 6 months of interview
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Essential criteria
- Clinical experience and expertise in Neurosurgery
- Demonstrable evidence of an interest in Complex Spinal Surgery
- Completed a formal Fellowship in Complex Spine at a recognised institution or additional equivalent experience in this field.
- Completion of a recognised Spinal Fellowship
Desirable criteria
- Previous Consultant Experience
