Job overview

An opportunity has arisen for the appointment of a Senior Clinical Fellow in Plastic Surgery with an interest in skin oncology. The role will be within the Department of Trauma, Orthopaedic and Plastic Surgery, at Salford Royal Hospital of Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust. This is a 12 months post which will provide an opportunity for the appointee to learn and develop subspecialty-level skills in the management of plastics elective and trauma surgery. 

The Salford Royal Hospital is a Major Trauma Centre for Greater Manchester (population of 3.2 million).  

Salford Royal Hospital provides services to the people of Salford in addition to regional and national services for particular sub specialties.  In total there are currently 29 consultant surgeons within the directorate. 

The Department is supported by Deanery ST3+ registrars and middle grades, Specialty Doctors and junior doctor at all levels. We also have a team of Trauma Nurse Coordinators who supports the trauma service and 2 Consultant Orthogeriatricians with advanced nurse practitioners who support our elderly trauma & orthopaedic patients. 
 

 

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be based at Salford Royal Hospital with the possibility of elective lists also based at other hospitals within the Northern Care Alliance.  

The successful applicant must have full registration with the GMC and continue to hold a Licence to Practise. 

The appointee will be expected to participate fully in the provision of services to the residents of Salford. 

The post holder will join a 1 in 7 on call rota model with corresponding banding. 

The post-holder will be expected to take a role in ensuring delivery of a quality service. This will include the following: 

  • Implementing and ensuring compliance with Trust and national policies and procedures. 
  • Participate in reviewing and allocating resources appropriately 
  • Participate in reviewing and managing progress and improvement within the area. 

The post holder will be required to ensure that services are delivered within agreed parameters, covering clinical guidelines and also national performance waiting time targets. There will be particular emphasis within this post on supporting the service to achieve the National Cancer Waiting time targets.  

The post holder will be expected to contribute to the ongoing improvement of the clinical service.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MRCS or equivalent
  • ATLS
Desirable criteria
  • Higher degree such as: - PG Master - PG Diploma
  • FRCS (Plast)

Professional Registration

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC Registration and a Licence to Practice
Desirable criteria
  • Higher degree in research
  • Formal teaching qualification

Knowledge, Training & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Previous Plastics Experience
  • Professional Registration
  • Professional Qualifications
  • 18 months+ experience in plastic surgery at any level
  • Logbook evidence of Hand trauma and elective plastic surgery including basic skin cancer surgery
  • Interest and knowledge of audit
  • Evidence of completion of audits
  • Proven ability to teach
Desirable criteria
  • Ability to work independently but with supervision
  • Good communication skills, written and presentation
  • 6 months+ experience in plastic surgery at registrar level by time of taking up post
  • Published research or audits or case reports in peer reviewed journals
  • Attendance of relevant plastic surgery courses
