This patient facing research delivery role is only available to students from Manchester Metropolitan University  who are in their 2nd year on a life science course with a 3rd year placement component. 

Successful candidates will be placed with the Inpatient or the Neurology Research Delivery Teams based at Salford Royal Hospital. 

The Inpatient team cover the Respiratory, Gastroenterology, Upper GI cancer, Neurological cancer, Orthopaedic, Spinal, Ageing, Trauma, Anaesthetic & Peri-operative care portfolios.

The Neurological research team support studies looking at MS, Parkinson's disease, MND, Epilepsy and many other neurological conditions.  

Whilst successful candidates will get an opportunity to work on a variety of research trials their main focus will be working to support the below research projects:  

Liquid biopsy biomarker analysis for early diagnosis and non-invasive monitoring of brain tumours 

Immunology of Respiratory Conditions 

The Multiple Sclerosis Bio-repository collection

Main duties of the job

We are looking for a motivated and effective communicator with a ‘can do’ attitude and an eye for detail. They will need to take ownership and delivery of their work with a desire to develop their research skills.

They should be organised/able to prioritise and demonstrate initiative, within the ethically approved confines of the protocol and Good Clinical Practice (GCP). You should be able to thrive on challenges and be an effective problem solver.

Some of your key responsibilities will include:

  • Screening and recruiting eligible participants
  • Educating participants about the studies and obtaining informed consent
  • Collecting and recording study data accurately, in accordance with GCP
  • Ensuring that study documentation is maintained and stored securely
  • Complete training to perform venepuncture, sample processing along with other trial specific training.  
  • Completion of national care certificate. 

To be successful in this role, you need to have strong interpersonal and communication skills, be organised and detail orientated.

Essential criteria
  • Currently studying at MMU in 2nd year on life science course with 3rd year placement component
  • Willingness to work towards national care certificate
  • Evidence of ability to converse at ease with members of the public and provide advice

Kowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Experience of promoting care formally / informally
  • Good communication skills (written & verbal)
  • Good organisational skills
  • Good customer service skills
  • Evidence of ability to work flexibly to meet the demands of the service
Desirable criteria
  • Demonstrate an interest OR previous experience in caring for patients in an acute setting
