Job overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen for highly motivated individual to join our UGI cancer team as a Pathway Navigator. We are looking for an individual who is passionate about delivering earlier cancer pathways by ensuring a coordinated and smooth service for patients through their pathway.
We are keen to hear from individuals who have the necessary drive and motivation to support service delivery.
Main duties of the job
The Cancer Pathway Navigator role will be involved from the beginning of the patient’s pathway and will support the clinical team in implementing early diagnostic pathways for patients with suspected cancer to achieve definitive diagnosis by day 28. They will ensure all patients move through the pathway without delay which will ultimately lead to a quicker diagnosis and treatment.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
With frequent contact with patients and their families, it is essential that the post holders are emotionally resilient with a caring and sensitive attitude. They will also have excellent communication skills to liaise with a wide range of health professionals to ensure tests and appointments are coordinated and scheduled in a timely manner and patients are kept informed at all times.
The ideal candidate will have an understanding of cancer targets and patient pathways. It is desirable that they have previous NHS experience in a patient facing role, a good level of education, experience of using Cancer Waiting Times systems, clinical IT systems and are competent in Microsoft Office packages. We are looking for enthusiastic and conscientious team players with excellent time-management and organisational skills who can work autonomously and well under pressure.

Essential criteria
- Experience of working with multi-disciplinary teams and in Isolation.
- Experience of patient or customer engagement
- Proven experience of working to tight and strict deadlines
Desirable criteria
- Previous experience of working in the NHS or social care
- Knowledge of cancer and the cancer diagnosis and treatment pathways
Education & Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Educated to GCSE level with a minimum of five GCSE’s or equivalent qualification/ experience
- ECDL or equivalent skills
- NVQ 2/3 In Health or Social Care or equivalent experience
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Computer literate with good knowledge and understanding of computer packages e.g. Microsoft Office
- Ability to communicate at all levels and in difficult circumstances
Desirable criteria
- Knowledge and experience of using Trust IT systems, e.g. Medway, CRIS, SCR
- Knowledge of relevant cancer treatments, interventions and terminology
Skills & Abilities
Essential criteria
- A commitment to collaborative working to create best outcomes
- An ability to travel between sites if required
- A commitment to quality and safety

The postholder will have access to vulnerable people in the course of their normal duties and as such this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
