Band 7 - Biomedical Scientist Team Leader/Biochemistry Senior BMS

Full time - 37.5h per week. 

Main hours will be Mon - Fri 0900 - 1730. And must be available to cover any of the 24/7 shifts if all other options have been exhausted. 

The Pathology department at Stepping Hill Hospital (Stockport NHS Foundation Trust) is seeking a Biochemistry Senior BMS to join the Blood Sciences team.  The successful applicant(s) would be joining a friendly and passionate staffing group providing diagnostic services to the hospital patients a  wider community.

The role supports the delivery of Blood Sciences services. The successful must  deputise for and assist the Technical Heads of Department in order to maintain a high quality service in Blood Sciences satisfying users’ requirements within the resources available.

The successful candidate will take a leading role in delivering many IT configurations for Biochemistry department; therefore they must demonstrate a passion, knowledge, understanding and experience of laboratory IT aspects e.g. using LIMS, setting up and mapping tests on LIMS and analysers, the transmission of information and data between various requesting and reporting applications, instrument middleware, statistics and complex data gathers, troubleshooting departmental IT problems, setting up tests on NPEx etc.

Main duties of the job

  • To ensure the highest scientific standards are maintained and to contribute to the improvement of technical and scientific standards within the department.
  • To assist in the setting up, monitoring and maintenance of quality control procedures.
  • To oversee the release of authorised results and to ensure such results are checked for accuracy of computer inputting.
  • To assist the Technical Heads in formulating the department’s standard protocols in conjunction with the Consultant Haematologist and Clinical Lead.
  • To supervise Biomedical Scientists and other staff.
  • To deputise for the Technical Heads and senior colleagues as required.
  • To oversee decisions made on the validity of results and the need for further or repeat tests, as well as the interpretation of results carried out in the department.
  • To assist the Technical Head of Department in ensuring Trust HR policies are followed and to participate in recruitment and selection processes as required.
  • To supervise and perform investigations of varying complexity - this includes both routine and specialist work.

  • Extensive practical experience as a BMS in relevant discipline; gained through working in an NHS environment or equivalent

Education & Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • UK BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science or equivalent (acceptable to IBMS/HCPC)
  • Registered Biomedical Scientist with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)
  • IBMS Specialist Portfolio in relevant discipline or equivalent
  • MSc in relevant discipline or equivalent e.g. Fellowship of the IBMS, IBMS Higher Specialist Diploma
  • Evidence of participation in CPD
Desirable criteria
  • Management qualification or relevant experience
  • Training for trainers

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Computer literate – e.g. Can competently use Microsoft Office applications, knowledge and understanding of LIMS, middleware and other relevant pathology and Trust IT applications
  • Advanced theoretical and practical knowledge of current methodology and developments in one or more blood sciences discipline
  • A wide knowledge of MHRA and/or ISO 15189 standards
  • Sound understanding of laboratory Health & Safety and risk assessment aspects
  • Knowledge and understanding of QMS activities including document control, audit and CAPAs
Desirable criteria
  • An appreciation of local issues
