Job overview
The Department of Ear, Nose and Throat Surgery provides a comprehensive service to a population of approximately 350,000. The specialty is part of the Surgery, GI and Critical Care Business Group. The team provides elective surgery for GP referrals subject to agreed Commissioner protocols.
Stepping Hill Hospital’s Department of Ear, Nose and Throat Surgery carries out approximately 300 elective inpatient procedures, 1200 day case procedures and approximately 18,000 outpatient attendances per year.
The Department provides a wide range of services including Otology, Rhinology, Neck Lump, Thyroid, and General ENT. The Department also has an established Facial Skin Cancer service.
The appointee will be responsible for the care of patients referred by general practitioners and internal departments and will undertake clinics, ward rounds and theatre lists as appropriate. The post holder will offer management of conditions affecting both adult and paediatric patients. There is an expectation that all Consultants contribute equitably to the running of the department. Multi Disciplinary Team work is deemed a key component to providing and maintaining a high-quality service. The proposed ‘programmed activities’ are outlined below:
Main duties of the job
The successful candidates will be a full time Consultant appointment in Ear Nose and Throat surgery. They will form part of a team of six full-time ENT Consultants at Stepping Hill Hospital.
This posts is an essential development to support the service’s progression towards the reduction and maintenance of waiting times for patients.
The post holders will be expected to have Benign Head and Neck experience, as well as performing General Adult and Paediatric Ear, Nose and Throat surgery.
The candidates will be expected to integrate with the existing team of Consultants in order to provide a complete Ear, Nose and Throat Surgery service.
The out-of-hours on-call covers Stepping Hill, Wythenshawe & Macclesfield Hospitals. This is currently a 1:10 on-call, which links in with our colleagues at Wythenshawe Hospital.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Consultants have been allocated weekday HOT day-time on-call sessions to enable ward rounds and facilitate early senior review of non-elective attendances and admissions. The format has been successful but may be subject to change.

Proposed Job Plan:
The consultant job plan will comprise of 10 PAs per week:
8.5 Direct Clinical Care
2 Theatre

1 Additional Admin
2 HOT daytime on-call session including ward rounds
0.5 Emergency attendance (planned/unpredictable)

Stockport NHS Foundation Trust provides services at Stepping Hill Hospital, and other specialist centres, as well as community health services for Stockport. We are no ordinary trust. We hold a unique position in the Stockport community as the provider of healthcare and we are one of its largest employers. We are an integrated provider of acute hospital and community services to the people of Stockport, as well serving the populations of East Cheshire and the High Peak in North Derbyshire. If successful this vacancy will require an enhanced DBS check at a cost of £54.50. This cost will be deducted from your first Trust salary

- FRCS (ORL-HNS) or equivalent
- Completion of CCT/higher specialist training or equivalent in Otolaryngology
- Clinical experience and expertise in Otolaryngology

- Knowledge and appreciation of the core legal, ethical and political issues which govern medical practice
