Job overview

FULL TIME POST - 40.00 HOURS A WEEK

We are looking for a dedicated Senior Clinical Fellow to join the team in Gastroenterology at the Stepping Hill Hospital site of the Stockport NHS Foundation Trust.

The post holders will also be expected to participate in teaching and mentoring of junior medical staff, medical students and specialist nurses. Full support for professional development would be provided.

Main duties of the job

The principal clinical responsibility is to assist in the investigation and treatment of in-patients admitted to the Gastroenterology service. Another responsibility would be to provide middle grade support to the junior team on the wards. It is anticipated because of full shift rota commitments of the junior staff there will be on occasions the need for middle grades to support the junior ward cover .They will be expected to attend consultant ward rounds with the consultant of the day.

These are structured formal ward rounds where the clinical fellow will be expected to present cases, and discuss the differential diagnosis and management. The appointee will be expected to do outpatient clinics. Outpatient experience is closely supervised and the fellow will be expected to present cases, and discuss management with the supervising consultant.

There will be opportunities for training in endoscopy.

The post holder is responsible for maintaining a full clinical record of patients admitted to the ward. S/he will be required to produce a written summary of the admission at the time of discharge; S/he will participate in audit data collection, and attend clinical governance / audit meetings. The appointee will be expected to dictate out-patient letters from patients or patients seen in clinic. Jointly manage with the other junior clinical fellows and trainees in the department of patients admitted to the allocated wards and clinical areas of responsibility.

The service is supported by Trainee doctors and a full complement of Junior clinical fellows who operate on an call rota as well as specialist nurses.

The clinical fellow will be allocated an educational supervisor who will meet with the trainee to monitor progress at regular intervals. Supervision is based on competencies assessments

The post is for a basic 10 sessional activities per week plus general medical on call sessions (1:12 weekend and 1:8 week day). The post holder must be able to work as an independent practitioner without direct daily consultant supervision. They should have experience in teaching and research.

If successful this vacancy will require an enhanced DBS check at a cost of £54.50. This cost will be deducted from your first Trust salary 

In addition to this it will be a condition of your employment that you will join the DBS update service and pay the annual subscription fee of £16.

Essential criteria
  • Medical Qualification
  • GMC Registration
  • MRCP part 1 or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • MRCP parts 1&2 or equivalent.
  • Working towards MRCP Paces.

Clinical Experience and Skills

Essential criteria
  • Broad training at SHO level which demonstrates appropriate experience in and a positive attitude towards General Medicine.
  • 6 months experience in Cardiology.
  • Ability to demonstrate broad clinical skills in the comprehensive management of all patients
  • Experience in and commitment to post graduate and undergraduate education.
  • Skills in common procedures.
Desirable criteria
  • Previous registrar level experience.

Research and Publications

  • Evidence of academic excellence.
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of recent independent or supervised research with relevant publications, demonstrating understanding of research methodology and commitment
