Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated Band 3 Dietetic Support Worker to join our Integrated Nutrition and Dietetic service at Stockport NHS Foundation Trust.  The team has recently received funding to expand the team with an additional Dietetic Support Worker. This is based in our community Dietitian team at Kingsgate House. The team comprises of an Integrated Nutrition and Dietetic Service Lead, Team Lead, Clinical Lead Frailty Dietitian, Specialist band 6 dietitians, band 5 Dietitian, Dietetic Support Worker and  Secretary. We are integrated service with the Acute Dietitian team based at Stepping Hill Hospital, as well as patient education colleagues. 

The role  will be focused on providing a high standard of dietetic care to community patients requiring nutritional support. There will be opportunities working alongside Dietitians in their specialist areas.

As a Support Worker you will be required to complete the Care Certificate programme. Professional development is encouraged through supervision, appraisal, mandatory training and CPD activities. Supervision is provided by senior clinical staff. 

You will require to have access to a vehicle which can be used for work purposes or will be able to travel as required to meet the needs of the service. Please note not all office locations or client care bases maybe reached by public transport. Please state in your supporting statement how you will achieve this requirement.

Main duties of the job

The Integrated Nutrition and Dietetic Service is based across acute and community settings. This is primarily based in the community in Stockport. 


The Dietetic Support Worker assists the Dietitians in certain aspects of this work including:

  • Liaising with the Dietitians and following plans of care for patient follow up  Actively participate within group education under the supervision of the Dietitian
  • Data entry regarding product orders
  • Assisting with the daily supply of dietetic products to patients in their own homes and working with the enteral feeding companies
  • A working knowledge of different products and their clinical use is required.
  • Assisting selected patients on the wards to choose preferred and clinically suitable food and drinks, under the supervision of a Dietitian.
  • Responsible for the service ordering of supplies and consumables.
  • Telephone calls to nursing homes regarding residents
  • Electronic ordering of products

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • To deal courteously and efficiently with incoming telephone calls from healthcare professionals, patients and members of the public.
  • Liaise, where necessary, with Dietitians or action as appropriate 
    to role.
  • Office administration. Provide cover for some secretarial duties during leave
  • Assist with the supply of therapeutic dietary products and equipment to the service.
  • Check stock deliveries against delivery notes where required.
  • Assist the Dietitians with monitoring of product supplier company performance against contract.
  • Assist Dietitians with the arrangements for patients on tube feeds. 
    This may include completing computerised registration for the home feed service, telephone calls and emails to GP surgeries, liaison with acute Dietitians and the home feed service company.
  • Enter data as needed into tables.
  • Provide follow-up support to selected patients who have been seen first by the Dietitian and monitor nutritional care plan this may be in clinics, patient’s own homes or nursing homes.
  • Gather information for referrals made to the Dietitian
  • Visit patient’s homes to undertake weight assessments
  • Actively participate within group education under the supervision of the Dietitian
  • Attend Trust mandatory training.
  • Attend and participate in meetings as required
  • Provide training on malnutrition universal screening tool/ nutritional screening where required.
  • Support nutritional analysis using computer software, where required
  • Adhere to the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and British Dietetic Association (BDA)

 If successful this vacancy will require an enhanced DBS check at a cost of £54.90. This cost will be deducted from your first Trust salary

In addition to this it will be a condition of your employment that you will join the DBS update service and pay the annual subscription fee of £16.
