Job overview

Stockport NHS Foundation Trust is looking for an enthusiastic  Speech & Language Therapy Assistant to join their integrated multi-disciplinary therapy team.  This role will include working in a hospital setting with acute and rehabilitation stroke patients as well as in outpatient clinics and community settings, including domiciliary visits. You will be expected to work within a multi-disciplinary team supporting holistic treatments to patients under the guidance of a qualified Speech and Language Therapist, carrying out initial communication screens and supporting the Speech and Language Therapy team with running videofluoroscopy and FEES clinics. You will also carry out administrative and clerical tasks, including making therapy resources and stock-checking therapy supplies.

This role will involve working 3 days per week in the outpatient service and 2 days per week in the stroke service.

Full training will be provided and you will have access to regular supervision with a Speech & Language Therapist, monthly team meetings and regular training sessions to ensure you are well supported in this role.

Main duties of the job

 

The post holder will be involved in providing high standard care within our outpatient and stroke Speech and Language Therapy services.

They will closely work with the Therapists and perform a wide range of tasks to provide care around swallowing and communication for patients within the community and hospital setting.  This will include liaising with patients, healthcare professionals and carers to support patient management.

They will support the team with administration and house-keeping duties.

They will monitor stock levels of swallowing assessment supplies and completing orders.

They will support running of instrumental swallowing assessments.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Main Duties and Responsibilities

 ·         Complete administration tasks around new referrals and patient discharge including phone calls to patients/carers, completing onward referrals and updating the GP of current recommendations.

·         Liaising with patients, healthcare professionals and wards with regard to checking the tolerance of new swallowing recommendations.

·         Book patients for bi-weekly videofluoroscopy clinics and organise and set up the clinics under the supervision of a Speech and Language Therapist.

·         Prepare the FEES clinic including decontamination of equipment.

·         Complete audits under supervision.

·         Under the direction of a qualified registered therapist assist with patient therapy activities.

·      To be able to accurately report back to the therapists any work undertaken.

·      Monitor stock and keep up-to-date with documentation i.e. filing and photocopying.

·      To assist patient with independent prescribed practice provided by qualified therapists. This will include providing daily communication and swallowing therapy to patients and communication groups.

·      To assist in communication screens when required.

·      To assist with other assistant duties across the wider therapies team as required.

·      To assist with administration activities such as processing referrals on relevant IT systems, taking telephone calls.

·      To be able to accurately report back to the therapists any work undertaken. To include timely live data collection in line with SSNAP and RCP standards and guidelines

If successful this vacancy will require an enhanced DBS check at a cost of £54.90. This cost will be deducted from your first Trust salary

Essential criteria
  • G.C.S.E. English
  • Fluency in spoken English
  • GCSE Maths

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Understand the day-to-day role of a Therapy Assistant
  • Awareness of the roles of Speech and Language Therapists, Dietitians, Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapists.
  • NVQ Level 3 in Health and Social Care or equivalent qualifications
Desirable criteria
  • NVQ level 3 in Diagnostic and Therapy Support

Experience
