Job overview
An opportunity has arisen for a rotational Therapy Assistant to come and work within our Integrated Therapy Team at Stockport NHS Foundation Trust. The post will rotate on a four monthly basis across acute inpatient specialities. These include Trauma and Orthopaedics, Medicine, Surgery and Stroke services.
As part of the rotational service you will work closely with several different disciplines under the supervision/direction of the therapists. You will specifically be learning and carrying out duties for the Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapists. You will have a hands-on role with patients, undertake a variety of clinical tasks and will be supporting the clinical teams with administration duties.
You must be motivated, enthusiastic, demonstrate initiative and commit to assisting with the delivery of high quality care.
Main duties of the job
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- To partake in a four monthly rotation working across several inpatient therapy services
- Under the direction of a qualified registered therapist (OT/PT) assist with patient therapy activities
- Prepare patients for treatment ensuring a safe environment
- To be able to accurately report back to the therapists any work undertaken
- Monitor stock and keep up to date with documentation i.e. filing, photocopying
- To assist patient with independent prescribed practice provided by qualified therapists
- To work alongside therapists/other assistants to run patient activity groups when required
- To assist in communication screens when required

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Responsibility for Patient Care
- Under the supervision of a qualified therapist(OT/PT) to assist with patient therapy activities
- To support patients to carry out independent and prescribed practice provided by qualified therapists
- Prepare patients for treatment ensuring a safe environment
- Assist patients/service users/carers/relatives during incidental contacts.
- Evaluate a patient’s condition and report any intervention accurately to a qualified therapist
- May have to undertake tasks that involve promoting independence with personal care
- To contribute to a multi-disciplinary approach to patient care by contribution to the identification of new patients and dissemination of information throughout the team
Communications
- To be able to communicate effectively with the multi-disciplinary team, under the supervision of a qualified therapist (OT/PT)
- To communicate effectively when giving/receiving verbal and written information
- Report accurately on a patient’s condition/performance to a qualified therapist
- Provide routine information to patients and carers and know how to overcome barriers to understanding
- Complete patients clinical notes according to Trust and departmental standards
- With training be able to confidently communicate with patients with communication difficulties including verbal and non-verbal communication
Planning and organising
- Follow team timetable for patient contact time when required
- Organise and plan own day to day workload or activities in order to meet the demands of the job role
- Carry out tasks required to maintain safety, cleanliness and tidiness of all therapy areas.
- Organise and prioritise workload in consultation with the supervising therapist
- Undertake clerical duties as required
The successful candidate will be provided with relevant training and supervision and appraisal processes are in place to encourage further self-development.

If successful this vacancy will require an enhanced DBS check at a cost of £54.90. This cost will be deducted from your first Trust salary
In addition to this it will be a condition of your employment that you will join the DBS update service and pay the annual subscription fee of £16.

Education & Qualifications
Essential criteria
- G.C.S.E. English
- Fluency in spoken and written English
- Good numeracy skills
Desirable criteria
- NVQ level 2 or equivalent in Diagnostic and Therapy Support
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Understanding of the role of Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy within a hospital setting.
- Knowledge of the multidisciplinary team
Experience
Essential criteria
- Transferable previous life or work experience that would add value to the role
Desirable criteria
- Previous experience in Healthcare /Allied Health Professional / Social care setting
