Job overview
This is a 12 month locum post which is being advertised with a view to finding a suitable candidate to fill existing vacancies within the Department of General Surgery. The post is for a Locum Consultant in General Surgery, with a subspecialty interest in benign upper gastrointestinal, laparoscopic hernia, day case and emergency surgery would be welcomed and we would expect the post holder to assist in the assessment of patients presenting on a lower GI suspected cancer pathway. The unit provides elective and emergency general surgery, benign upper gastrointestinal, general and sub-specialist colorectal surgery. Minimally invasive surgery is well established within our surgical service.
This post will maintain the efficiency and capacity of the Directorate of General Surgery and will include day case operating at Trafford General Hospital. Emergency and Elective General surgical services are undergoing re-organization/transformation across MFT. The post holder will be expected to accommodate their sessions to fit into the new service. The employing Trust is Manchester Foundation Trust (MFT).
Main duties of the job
Applications are sought from candidates who will help deliver General Surgery in both emergency and elective settings. The appointee will join the current team of surgeons where there is a tradition of support for Consultant colleagues. There is an established habit of “mentoring” new colleagues.
The unit currently runs a 1 in 11 consultant of the week duty rota, responsible for emergency admissions. We also have an established Surgical Ambulatory Care Receiving Unit (SACRU) run by Advanced Care Practitioners supported by Consultants on a rota.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Fully registered with GMC and licence to practice
- MRCS (Part A&B)
- Eligibility to live and work in the UK
- Medical degree from recognised university
Desirable criteria
- Entry on the GMC specialist register via CCT (proposed CCT date should be within 12 months of the date of interview), CESR or European Community Rights
- Postgraduate thesis
Experience
Essential criteria
- Demonstrates interest and commitment to acute surgery
- Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on range of acute surgical problems
- Understanding of clinical governance
- Completion of minimum of 12 years substantive surgical work since primary medical qualification
Desirable criteria
- Documented ability to handle an acute surgical take
Knowledge and skills
Essential criteria
- Completed minimum of 6 years’ registrar experience in general surgery and managing an emergency general surgical take
