Job overview

COPD specialist physiotherapist post within the Community Respiratory Team (CRT) based at Wythenshawe Hospital.  

 Service roles include:

 - In patient reviews of COPD and asthma patients

 - Home visits to assess COPD patients (routine and escalation visits)

 - Assess and run pulmonary rehabilitation classes

 - Liaise with the MDT in the hospital and community settings

 - Management of the CRT (working alongside another Band 7 staff in the team)

 - Support the Oxygen service as needed 

The CRT provide a 7 day service 8am-6pm - flexible hours to meet these service needs

Main duties of the job

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the South Manchester Community Respiratory Team (CRT) for an experienced COPD physiotherapist.  This role provides the successful candidate the opportunity to work both clinically and managerially, to lead a team and influence service delivery for the COPD patients in both the acute hospital setting and the local community.   The CRT is a multidisciplinary team of nurses and physiotherapists delivering a range of services for people living with COPD across 7 days.  

The post holder will work alongside the MDT to provide evidence based respiratory care that facilitates early supportive discharge from the acute setting and endeavors to prevent ED admissions by timely interventions to prevent crisis.  Working across community and acute settings providing support and education for patients with COPD and other respiratory diseases.

The CRT also work closely with the Oxygen Service supporting with the assessment and community follow up for patients requiring home oxygen. The team provide Pulmonary Rehabilitation classes in the community  and are currently PRAS Accredited, the post holder will be involved in the leadership, service delivery and development of this service. 

Applicants should have a sound knowledge of respiratory conditions and treatments and willing to undertake appropriate specialist training within the post.

Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check

What is a DBS Check?

A DBS check is a background check that reveals any criminal convictions, cautions, reprimands, or warnings. The level of check required depends on the role:

Standard DBS: Checks for spent and unspent convictions, cautions, reprimands, and final warnings.

Enhanced DBS: Includes the above, plus any additional information held by local police that’s considered relevant to the role.

Enhanced with Barred Lists: Includes all of the above, plus checks against the children’s and/or adults’ barred lists.

Who Needs a DBS Check

The Costs for a DBS

At Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT), roles that require a DBS check are subject to a cost recovery policy. This means that the cost of submitting and processing a DBS application if you are successful and join us, will be deducted from your salary within the first three months of employment.   If, however, you withdraw from a conditional offer after the DBS process has begun, you will still be liable for the cost incurred.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Relevant professional qualification BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy or RN/RGN
  • Active HPC registration/NMC pin
  • Clean driving licence and access to a car for work purposes
Desirable criteria
  • Related advanced respiratory qualification
  • NMC Prescriber
  • Leadership +/- management qualifcation
  • Clinical Examination Skills or similar

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working within a respiratory care setting especially chronic lung disease, minimum of 6 months
  • Relevant experience at band 6 level
  • Experience of working as part of an MDT
  • Evidence of delivering teaching and education to staff groups and patients
  • Previous experience of audit/research/service development
  • Management experience (team/service/project etc)
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of community working and PCT partnership working
  • Experience of performing exercise testing and evaluation of results
  • Experience of working with COVID virtual ward services

IM&T

Essential criteria
  • Aware of applications of IT packages such as Microsoft Word and PowerPoint/excel
  • Good knowledge of clinical information systems
Desirable criteria
  • Experience with current systems (EPR, EMIS, Graphnet)
