Job overview

An exciting and unique opportunity to work within Alder Hey's Community Occupational Therapy Team in a permanent full time role has arisen within our North Sefton Community Team! 


The successful applicant will assist in the provision of Occupational Therapy services within North Sefton’s Early Years Pathway (0-5yrs) and Special Schools Pathway supporting children and young people (4-19yrs).  


You will have responsibility for the delivery and co-ordination of high quality Occupational Therapy with a range of conditions and presentations including developmental conditions, neurodisability, complex long term conditions and postural management needs.
 The successful candidate will be working in partnership with parents, carers, education and other service providers to ensure a child centred approach to therapy. We have a large team which includes admin support, OT assistants, physiotherapy assistants and physiotherapists. The successful candidate will work closely with all colleagues.


There is an in-service training programme with lots of opportunities for supervision and peer support. We have strong links with staff in acute services at Alder Hey and work in an integrated way with education and socials services colleagues across Sefton.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will work along side other Occupational Therapists and Assistants to assess and deliver intervention to children aged 0 – 5 years with developmental, postural and neurological difficulties as part of our Early Years team, and children with neurodisability as part of our Special Schools team in community settings across North Sefton.

To act as an autonomous practitioner within a specialised paediatric occupational therapy service.  To undertake  specialist assessment of babies and young children, and children with neurodisability within the community.  To formulate individual treatment plans, set clear goals and outcomes based on clinical reasoning skills.

To provide a range of specialist individualised therapeutic interventions, supporting children and families with neuro-disability, neuro-developmental and perceptual and sensory difficulties within a clinic, nursery, school and home setting.

To build on previous experience enabling further development of clinical and managerial competencies.  Manages own caseload and is responsible for the delivery of therapeutic intervention within the defined areas of the service.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical

  1. To be professional and legally responsible and accountable for all aspects of own work including the management of caseload.  To ensure a high standard of clinical care (for the patients under your management). In order to maximise function and independence.
  2. To demonstrate the ability to carry out specialist occupational assessment and interventions supporting babies and young children with neuro-disability and neuro-developmental problems, including those with perceptual and sensory difficulties.
  3. To hold an independent, complex and highly specialist caseload, being able to demonstrate highly specialist assessment, diagnostic, treatment and management plans with goals based on advanced clinical reasoning skills.
  4. To plan and implement highly individualised therapy programmes to be carried out by the therapist, Assistant, Educational Staff and Carers. To continually monitor, evaluate and modify the programmes to measure progress and ensure effectiveness of intervention for children with changing needs.
  5. To undertake specialist seating and equipment assessments, recommend purchases and provide training in its appropriate use within a mainstream setting. To continually re-evaluate the suitability and clinical effectiveness of the equipment provided and make adjustments and recommendations accordingly.
  6. To provide highly specialist verbal and written advice to a range of professionals regarding the management and care of children with a range of conditions and presentations.
  7. To write highly specialist reports including those for the EHCP Process.
  8. To work collaboratively with private and voluntary sector providers, Health and Social Services, carers and education staff carrying out joint assessments and formulating integrated programmes of care.
  9. To ensure the smooth transition of young children into the education environment.
  10. To refer, liaise and negotiate with other health and education professionals determining the best holistic approach in order to best meet the child’s needs. 

 Professional 

  1. To act in accordance with the Rules of Professional Conduct and Standards of practice set by the Royal College of Occupational Therapy (RCOT) and Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC).
  1. To maintain own continuing professional development (CPD) by keeping abreast of any trends and developments and incorporate them as necessary into your work. Being responsible for maintaining written evidence within CPD portfolio.
  1. To be an active member of the in-service training programme available via staff meetings, tutorials, training sessions, external courses and reflective practice by regular attendance and participation in the former including the delivery of presentations.
  1. To participate in the staff appraisal scheme, personal development review (PDR) and clinical supervision.
  1. To participate in service development and review, taking into account the views of service users i.e. parents, carers and other professionals.
  1. Participates in evidence based projects/audits contributes to the implementation of these changes within designated team/area.
  1. To communicate effectively and work collaboratively with Allied Health Professionals (AHP’s), social services, education colleagues and voluntary organisations to ensure delivery of a timely and co-ordinated multi-agency service. This will include the identification of issues and attendance of patient reviews in variety of settings and the planning of ongoing care.
  1. To demonstrate a sound understanding of Trust values, Clinical Governance and Risk Management and apply to the work situation.
  1. To attend/ complete Mandatory Training and incorporate these within working practices.
  1. To attend Safeguarding training and work in accordance within the local and national guidelines.
  1. To be aware of Health and Safety aspects of your work and implement any policies, which may be required to improve the safety of your work area, including your prompt recording and reporting of accidents and incidents (in line with policy), and ensuring that equipment use is safe.
  1. To be responsible for equipment used in carrying out occupational therapy duties, and to adhere to departmental policy, including competence to use equipment and to ensure its safe use by others through, teaching, training and supervision of practice.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Diploma/Degree in Occupational Therapy, recognised by HPCP
  • Member of HPCP
Desirable criteria
  • Member of Royal College of Occupational Therapy
  • Post Graduate courses relevant to Clinical Specialty
  • Occupational therapy specific post-graduate courses in paediatrics

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of experience working within a community setting
  • Wide knowledge of conditions and presentations and impact on occupational performance.
  • Knowledge of specialist paediatric approaches and high standard of performance in a range of general paediatric skills
  • Experience of positive working as part of a multidisciplinary/multiagency team.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of supervising junior staff and students
  • Experience of audit
  • Evidence of appropriately delegating to other staff with understanding of process of delegation.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of knowledge or a wide range of approaches used within Occupational Therapy.
  • Evidence of being capable of completing Occupational Therapy assessment techniques.
  • Proven physical ability to carry out any therapeutic handling required.
  • Evidence of knowledge around current trends within Occupational Therapy.
