An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Medicine Division at Aintree University Hospital, part of the University Hospitals of Liverpool Group, for an Assistant Service Manager to support Respiratory and Sleep Medicine.
This established role sits within the Cardiology and Respiratory Care Group and is ideally suited to a motivated, patient-focused individual with excellent communication skills and experience in operational management within a large acute Trust. A strong understanding of patient pathways and the patient journey is essential, along with the ability to work collaboratively with both clinical and non-clinical colleagues.
The successful candidate will have a proven track record of delivering service improvements, enhancing systems and processes, and driving performance outcomes. They will be able to build effective working relationships across a diverse range of staff groups to achieve positive outcomes for patients. The role requires excellent organisational and communication skills, with the ability to work under pressure, manage competing priorities, and meet demanding deadlines.
Main duties of the job
Reporting to the General Service Manager, the post holder will be a key member of the Care Group Management Team.
The Assistant Service Manager will be responsible for monitoring operational performance across the specialty and working closely with clinical and non-clinical colleagues to maintain and enhance service delivery and operational excellence.
The role includes supporting the delivery of specialty operational and administrative services, including the management of administrative teams and the monitoring of national and local Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) which include, RTT, DM01 and Cancer targets. The successful candidate will have experience in team management and possess the skills and personal attributes required to effectively address operational challenges.
The post holder will support the development and implementation of service improvement programmes and operational change initiatives within the specialty.
The Assistant Service Manager will also contribute to the management of specialty budgets and hold day-to-day operational and line management responsibility for designated services and functions. They will support workstreams that contribute to the delivery of Cost Improvement Programmes (CIPs) and contribute to achieving agreed financial targets.
In addition, the post holder will provide visible and accessible leadership to their teams, undertake line management responsibilities, and deputise for the General Service Manager as required.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- Monitor and support the delivery of business and workforce plans within the specialty.
- Ensure effective systems, structures and processes are in place to manage clinical quality, risk, assurance and public involvement activities.
- Take operational and line management responsibility for designated services and functions within the specialty.
- Support delivery of key performance indicators (KPIs), access standards, contractual requirements, CQUIN targets and CQC compliance.
