Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust is a provider of specialist health care and has a presence in community outreach sites and, in collaboration with other providers, our clinicians help deliver care closer to patients’ homes by holding local clinics at locations from Cumbria to Shropshire, in Wales and the Isle of Man. The Trust also provides inpatient care for children with complex mental health needs at our Sunflower House building newly relocated, and opened on the hospital site.
We currently have more than 4,000 staff working across our community and hospital sites. We’re also a teaching and training hospital providing education and training to around 540 medical and over 500 nursing and allied health professional students each year.

Job overview
We are looking for a Clinical Psychologist to work within the Staff Advice and Liaison Service for fixed term contract to cover maternity leave.
The role of clinical psychology within the Staff Advice and Liaison Service (SALS) at Alder Hey is a new and evolving area of specialism and has the aim of improving the health and effectiveness of the organisation and its people in a sustainable way through the application of specialist psychological and organisational knowledge and skills. Working alongside the SALS team, this role will help to further develop the psychological support offer to staff within Alder Hey. Contributing to the staff support offer at Alder Hey is a key part of the role and will include input to the ongoing development and day to day working of the Staff Advice & Liaison Service (SALS), a human-centric, psychology led listening service for all staff working in the organisation. This work will be undertaken autonomously within professional guidelines and the overall framework of the service’s policies and procedures and will utilise research skills for audit, policy and service development and research within the service.
Main duties of the job
To provide specialist psychological expertise to the organisation in understanding the emotional complexity of meeting healthcare needs for all staff and developing opportunities for reflective practice for all (clinical and non-clinical).
Provide psychologically focused assessments and interventions to staff on individual, group and team bases with a view to exploring and managing the emotional impact of work to increase effectiveness and wellbeing at work.
To provide specialist psychological input to the Staff Advice & Liaison Service (SALS). This will involve undertaking individual and team focused assessments based on the appropriate use, interpretation and integration of complex data from a variety of sources including psychological tests, self-report measures, rating scales, direct and indirect structured observations and semi-structured observations and semi-structured interviews with staff members and relevant networks.To make judgments involving highly complex facts, which require analysis and interpretation and comparison of a range of options. To formulate and implement plans of specialist psychological intervention or management of psychological problems, based on an appropriate multi-factorial and multi-theoretical psychological understanding of the presenting issues and employing methods based upon current evidence-based practice, across the full range of staff support and organisational settings.

To evaluate and make decisions about intervention options taking into account both theoretical and therapeutic models and highly complex factors regarding historical and developmental processes that have shaped the individual, team or organisational process.
To exercise autonomous professional judgment and responsibility for the psychological management of staff including assessment, formulation, intervention, discharge and effective communication of these plans where appropriate with SALS colleagues, and other internal and external services where indicated.
To provide specialist psychological advice, guidance and consultation to the multi- disciplinary formulation of appropriate psychosocial approaches or intervention plans and be involved in or oversee and co-ordinate specialist psychological aspects of their implementation in collaboration with other staff.
Contribute to the delivery and further development of Schwartz Rounds in the organisation along with the wider Alder Hey community and national Schwartz Team.
Contribute to the delivery and further development of SALS Pals, a community wide network of wellbeing champions within the Trust.
To undertake psychologically based risk assessment and management for staff where appropriate and to provide advice on the psychological aspects or risk assessment and management to other professions.
To provide and receive in a skilled and sensitive manner, highly complex, sensitive and sometimes contentious information concerning the assessment, formulation and treatment plans to staff and colleagues in an empathic and supportive way, using the highest levels of interpersonal skills in situations which could be highly emotive and sometimes antagonistic.
To effectively monitor the progress of both uni and multi-disciplinary interventions.
Work alongside HR colleagues and actively support the Trust’s Learning & Development department in the provision of training for organisational psychology interventions by providing information and expertise.
2 Professional and Advisory
To contribute to the development and maintenance of the highest professional standards of practice, through active participation in internal and external CPD training and development programme in consultation with professional and operational managers and within the HCPC and BPS, CPD best practice guidance and requirements.
To prepare for and attend an Annual Review/Personal Development Plan. To provide evidence of CPD undertaken e.g., in the form of a CPD logbook. To collaboratively set aims and objectives and systematically monitor progress.
To maintain the highest standards of record keeping including electronic data entry and recording, report writing and the responsible exercise of professional governance in accordance with professional codes of practice of the British Psychological Society and Trust policies and procedures.
To maintain up to date knowledge of legislation, national and local policies and issues in relation to organisational development and staff support.
To take part in regular professional supervision and appraisal and maintain an active engagement with current developments in the field of clinical psychology and related disciplines.
Education and Training
In common with all clinical psychologists, to receive regular clinical supervision and professional management, according to good practice guidelines, from a highly specialist or consultant clinical psychologist and where appropriate clinical supervision from other senior professional colleagues.
To further develop skills in the area of professional post-graduate teaching, training and supervision and to provide supervision of the psychological aspects of the clinical work of other MDT members, as appropriate.
To provide professional and clinical supervision of assistant / graduate psychologists and, as appropriate, to contribute to the supervision of individual cases for trainee clinical psychologists.
To contribute to the pre and post qualification teaching of clinical psychology, as appropriate.
To provide specialist advice, consultation and training to clinical and non-clinical staff across the organisation.
Organisational
To work with managers and colleagues to continually improve the quality of services within the overall Trust governance frameworks.
To contribute to the delivery of national and local priorities as set out in the Trust’s corporate objectives.
To perform other duties of a similar kind appropriate to the grade, which may be required from time to time by psychology managers.

Person specification
Essential and Desirable
Essential criteria
- Skills in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment, intervention and management, frequently requiring sustained and intense concentration.
- Well-developed skills in the ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, complex, highly technical and/or clinically sensitive information to service users and other professional colleagues within and outside the NHS.
- Skills in providing consultation to other professional and non-professional groups
- Doctoral level training in clinical psychology including specifically models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics and neuropsychology, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology as accredited by the BPS.
- Registration with the British Psychological Society as a Chartered Clinical Psychologist (or in the process of).
- Ability to teach and train others, using a variety of complex multi-media materials suitable for presentations within public, professional and academic settings
- Ability to identify and employ mechanisms of clinical governance as appropriate, to support and maintain clinical practice in the face of regular exposure to highly emotive material and challenging behavior.
Desirable criteria
- Experience of teaching, training and/or supervision.
- Knowledge of legislation in relation to mental health.
- Knowledge of and interest in the application of psychological theory to understanding the emotional impact of work in healthcare or other public sector settings
- Experience of the application of clinical psychology in different cultural contexts
- Pre-qualification training and qualifications in research methodology and/or other fields of applied psychology
- A passion for supporting staff to thrive and reach their potential, enabling them to deliver the best possible clinical care.
- Experience of working within a multi- cultural framework.
