Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust is a provider of specialist health care and has a presence in community outreach sites and, in collaboration with other providers, our clinicians help deliver care closer to patients’ homes by holding local clinics at locations from Cumbria to Shropshire, in Wales and the Isle of Man. The Trust also provides inpatient care for children with complex mental health needs at our Sunflower House building newly relocated, and opened on the hospital site.

We currently have more than 4,000 staff working across our community and hospital sites. We’re also a teaching and training hospital providing education and training to around 540 medical and over 500 nursing and allied health professional students each year.

Job overview

We are seeking a motivated and proactive People Services Advisor to play a key role in delivering the Trust's Sickness Absence Improvement Programme. This is an exciting opportunity to support managers across the organisation to improve attendance, promote employee wellbeing and deliver positive workforce outcomes.

Acting as a trusted advisor, the post holder will provide expert guidance on attendance management, support the analysis of workforce data, identify opportunities for service improvement and work collaboratively with managers to implement sustainable solutions. Working as part of a dynamic People Services team, the post holder will contribute to projects and initiatives that directly support the Trust's People Strategy and organisational objectives.

Main duties of the job

To organise and deliver appropriate People Services training initiatives as directed

To support managers to implement the sickness absence policy, including reviewing reasonable adjustments

To audit and monitor attendance ensuring that managers follow the relevant policy and procedures.

To assist managers to develop strategies to reduce long and short-term absence.

To be involved in the delivery of wellbeing and ill health prevention initiatives.

 To provide professional People Services advice and guidance.

To promote and maintain a positive employee relations climate which is based on co-operation and partnership working.

To support the development of action plans to attain and maintain performance levels within Trust thresholds with regard to relevant workforce related KPI’s.

To liaise with the workforce information team in producing meaningful workforce reports to a sufficient level of detail.

 To contribute to developing the equality agenda for colleagues and to operate in a manner that underpins the principals of the agenda.

To provide ad hoc training to colleagues at all levels within the Trust as required, involving supporting the design, delivery and evaluation of training provided.

To support the relevant line manager and/or lead as and when required

 To lead and assist in the delivery of internal People events, including induction as directed.

Person specification

Education and Training

Essential criteria
  • Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development qualified or equivalent experience, and Member of the CIPD
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent qualification or demonstrable experience within an HR related field of study
  • Evidence of continuing professional development

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Generalist Human Resources knowledge and experience
  • Experience of interpreting and advising on terms and conditions and application of policies and procedures
  • Experience of employee relations gained within a unionised environment
Desirable criteria
  • HR Adviser experience within the NHS or a large complex organisation
  • Experience of Advising on a range of HR issues, to all staff groups, i.e. medical, clinical, administrative and clerical colleagues

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Up to date knowledge of employment legislation
Desirable criteria
  • In depth knowledge of the Agenda for Change terms and conditions of Service

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to create and maintain positive working relationships with key stakeholders
  • Effective oral communication skills with the ability to communicate clearly and concisely to colleagues at all levels.
