Job overview

This is a 10 PA post in the Department of Paediatric Burns and Plastic Surgery, with a special interest in Laser Surgery and the management of Vascular Malformations. The appointee will lead the vascular malformations MDT and the laser service, collaborating with consultant colleagues, radiologists, oncologists and specialist nurses. In addition, the appointee will provide a general paediatric plastic surgery service, including participating in the on call rota, which includes paediatric burns and plastic surgery trauma. The successful candidate will be expected to participate in service development activity for the department and will be supported to undertake research and audit.

Most sessions will be worked at Alder Hey, but the appointee will link to appropriate partners in the adult sector for on-going management of transition-age patients.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will provide a paediatric plastic surgery service with an interest in laser surgery and the management of vascular malformations. The post-holder will lead the wider MDT for the management of vascular malformations and lead the laser team. The duties of the post include delivering new patient and follow up clinics, elective and emergency plastic surgery and delivering laser treatments. There is a 1 in 6 on call rota, category A,  based at Alder Hey, which includes the management of paediatric burns.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

This post attracts 10 programmed activities per week. There may be the opportunity to discuss and review this with the Clinical Director.

The job plan for the first three months will be based on a provisional/indicative timetable. A formal job plan will be agreed between the appointee and the Clinical Director within three months of the commencement date of the appointee.

The supporting professional activities (SPAs) allocation within the provisional job plan is an

illustrative guide only and will be finalised following individual agreement with successful candidate.

Education and Training

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC registration, licence to practice and specialist registration in Plastic Surgery (or eligible for or within 6 months of eligibility for)
  • Primary medical degree
  • CCT or within 6 months of CCT (or equivalent)
  • LASER Core of Knowledge
Desirable criteria
  • Higher Degree e.g. MSc
  • Teaching qualification
  • EMSB certification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience in paediatric plastic surgery
  • Experience in a paediatric burn unit
  • Experience of delivering laser treatments
Desirable criteria
  • Recent experience in paediatric burn management
