Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust is a provider of specialist health care and has a presence in community outreach sites and, in collaboration with other providers, our clinicians help deliver care closer to patients’ homes by holding local clinics at locations from Cumbria to Shropshire, in Wales and the Isle of Man. Job overview

We welcome applications for a 10PA Consultant Medical Microbiologist, based in the Department of Laboratory Medicine at Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust. This is a replacement position due to vacancy.

The post holder will join the Paediatric Infection Team: a close collaboration between Medical Microbiology, Infectious Diseases and Immunology. This is an exciting opportunity to join us as we further develop our Paediatric Infection Service. We are keen to work with potential applicants to support their personal goals as a consultant at Alder Hey, whether that is through service development, teaching, innovation, research or clinical leadership. Close collaborations exist with the University of Liverpool and with the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine. Further microbiology links with neighbouring Trusts may also be possible, depending on the background and interests of the successful candidate.

Main duties of the job

The appointee will be expected to contribute to the following:

  • Authorisation and interpretation of microbiology results.
  • Day to day supervision of diagnostic methods and examination of specimens.
  • Assessment and introduction of new tests, methods, and business planning.
  • Participation in audit and quality control within the laboratory. Responsibility for maintaining accreditation with UKAS.
  • As part of the collaborative Infection team: Liaise with clinicians, hospital staff, Consultant colleagues, general practitioners, and health protection consultants to discuss and provide advice on the diagnosis and management of infection in patients; the control and prevention of infections; and provide telephone advice where appropriate. Have regular communication with critical care areas and ward visits to other areas of the Trust as necessary, and participate in outbreak management, antibiotic action group, and multidisciplinary team meetings.
  • When rotating as Head of Department to: Provide clinical, professional, and technical leadership and direction for the delivery of a comprehensive Paediatric Clinical Microbiology service (analytical and interpretative), and to contribute to regional and national strategic planning in the development of the effective delivery of a Paediatric Microbiology service to agreed standards, with input into Trust management committees as required.
