Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust is a provider of specialist health care and has a presence in community outreach sites and, in collaboration with other providers, our clinicians help deliver care closer to patients’ homes by holding local clinics at locations from Cumbria to Shropshire, in Wales and the Isle of Man. The Trust also provides inpatient care for children with complex mental health needs at our Sunflower House building newly relocated, and opened on the hospital site.

The Community Speech & Language Therapy team at Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust works across the localities of Sefton and Liverpool, and as part of our development, we have a vacancy for Band 6 Specialist Speech & Language Therapists based in Liverpool..
We are looking to grow our innovative complex needs team and so we are looking for an enthusiastic and experienced clinician to join us in a permanent position.
This is a specialist post, working with a caseload of children and young people presenting with speech, language and communication needs as part of other conditions, such as Autism. Support from a range of highly specialist SLTs is common place, and access to external CPD courses is actively encouraged, along with opportunities to undertake research.
This post is based in the community; working in special schools, nurseries and patients homes, and so there is an expectation that the successful candidate will be able to travel to, and between various locations throughout the week.

Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will work with the team leader and neighbourhood team of speech and language therapists to provide a high-quality speech and language therapy service to children in a variety of community settings including mainstream and specialist schools, nurseries and patients homes.
We are looking for a therapist who can assess and provide a range of therapeutic interventions using specialist knowledge to children with a variety of speech, language and communication difficulties.
Experience working within a specialist educational setting, and having demonstrable skills in AAC systems would be advantageous.
The team work collaboratively with other partner agencies and carers to enable them to understand the communication needs and to provide appropriate advice, support and intervention.

Assess, implement and review Speech and Language Therapy treatment and discharge in a timely manner.
Ensure that children/carers are involved in the planning and prioritisation of their care plans and facilitate joint decisions wherever possible.
Work with clients on an individual and group basis.
Work independently, as a member of a Speech and Language Therapy Team and as a member of a wider multi-disciplinary team.
Demonstrate the ability to reflect on auditory, visual and kinaesthetic aspects of client’s communication and to identify appropriate strategies to facilitate and enhance communicative effectiveness
Engage in collaborative working practices with the children and young people, their parents / carers, educational, social care and health professionals.
Adapt practice to meet individual circumstances, including due regard for cultural and linguistic differences.
Negotiate with carers, clients and others around individual case management including the management of the communication environment.

Qualifications and Training
Essential criteria
- Recognised Speech and Language Therapy degree qualification or equivalent.
- Health Care Professional Council – Licence to practise.
- Evidence of relevant training and willingness to pursue and develop specialist knowledge
Desirable criteria
- Registered member of Royal College of Speech and Language Therapy
- Post-graduate qualification in dysphagia
Knowledge & Skills
Essential criteria
- Knowledge of and experience using a range of assessment tools relevant to the client group
- Knowledge of, and an understanding of national policies relevant to the client group
- Knowledge of and experience of a range of appropriate interventions relevant to the client group
- An understanding of the roles of other professionals relevant to the client group.
Desirable criteria
- Ability to travel between venues within the working day
Experience
Essential criteria
- Substantial experience working with a range of speech, language and communication difficulties at postgraduate level.
- Relevant experience providing assessment, care planning and report writing
Desirable criteria
- A member of a relevant clinical excellence group
- Experience of working independently within the clinical area of paediatric dysphagia
