Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust is a provider of specialist health care and has a presence in community outreach sites and, in collaboration with other providers, our clinicians help deliver care closer to patients’ homes by holding local clinics at locations from Cumbria to Shropshire, in Wales and the Isle of Man. The Trust also provides inpatient care for children with complex mental health needs at our Sunflower House building newly relocated, and opened on the hospital site.

We currently have more than 4,000 staff working across our community and hospital sites. We’re also a teaching and training hospital providing education and training to around 540 medical and over 500 nursing and allied health professional students each year.

Job overview

The Community Speech & Language Therapy team at Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust works across the localities of Sefton and Liverpool, and as part of our development, we have a vacancy for Band 6 Specialist Speech & Language Therapists based in Liverpool..

We are looking for an experienced therapist to join our innovative community clinic team, working in a pre-school language base and community clinics to support children and young people with early language and speech sound disorders. 

This is a specialist post, with support from a range of highly specialist speech and language therapists, and access to external CPD courses and opportunities to undertake research encouraged. 

This post is based in the community, and so there is an expectation that the successful candidate will be able to travel to, and between various locations throughout the week.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will work with the team leader and neighbourhood team of speech and language therapists to provide a high-quality speech and language therapy service to children in a variety of community settings including clinics, schools and nurseries.

We are looking for a therapist who can assess and provide a range of therapeutic interventions using specialist knowledge to children with a variety of speech, language and communication difficulties.

The team work collaboratively with other partner agencies and carers to enable them to understand the communication needs and to provide appropriate advice, support and intervention.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Assess, implement and review Speech and Language Therapy treatment and discharge in a timely manner.
Ensure that children/carers are involved in the planning and prioritisation of their care plans and facilitate joint decisions wherever possible.
Work with clients on an individual and group basis.
Work independently, as a member of a Speech and Language Therapy Team and as a member of a wider multi-disciplinary team.
Demonstrate the ability to reflect on auditory, visual and kinaesthetic aspects of client’s communication and to identify appropriate strategies to facilitate and enhance communicative effectiveness
Engage in collaborative working practices with the children and young people, their parents / carers, educational, social care and health professionals.
Adapt practice to meet individual circumstances, including due regard for cultural and linguistic differences.
Negotiate with carers, clients and others around individual case management including the management of the communication environment.

Person specification

Qualifications and Training

Essential criteria
  • Recognised Speech and Language Therapy degree qualification or equivalent.
  • Health Care Professional Council – Licence to practise.
  • Evidence of completion of RCSLT Competencies
Desirable criteria
  • Registered member of Royal College of Speech and Language Therapy
  • Recognised post graduate dysphagia qualification
  • Evidence of completion of short courses relevant to Speech & Language Therapy

Knowledge & Skills

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of and experience using a range of assessment tools relevant to the client group
  • Knowledge of, and an understanding of national policies relevant to the client group
  • Knowledge of and experience of a range of appropriate interventions relevant to the client group
  • An understanding of the roles of other professionals relevant to the client group.
Desirable criteria
  • Ability to travel between venues within the working day

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Substantial experience working with a range of speech, language and communication difficulties at postgraduate level.
  • Relevant experience providing assessment, care planning and report writing
Desirable criteria
  • A member of a relevant clinical excellence group
  • Experience of working independently within the clinical area of paediatric dysphagia
