Job overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Clinical Fellow in Multimodality Cardiovascular Imaging at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital.
The post will be fixed term for 12 Months, commencing September 2025.
The aims of this fellowship are to provide the skills and experience required to gain competency in multimodality cardiac imaging, with a specific focus on imaging-guided structural intervention. The post is ideally suited to candidates who are post CCT with a specialist interest in cardiac imaging, or approaching the latter stages of their imaging training. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to work alongside seven imaging cardiologists and six interventional cardiologists who form the TAVI/structural team, as well as the wider multi-disciplinary team of cardiologists and surgeons.
The cardiac imaging and structural interventional service in Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital has an established reputation for excellence and innovation. The group forms a significant proportion of the heart valve team, with a focus on collaborative working which is assisted by genuine respect and friendship amongst the group.
Main duties of the job
The fellow will work alongside the imaging consultants, and specific educational supervision/job plan can be tailored based on the successful applicant’s experience and requirements. The LHCH multimodality imaging program is one of the highest volume in the UK and includes cardiac MRI, cardiac CT, complex echocardiography and structural imaging (procedural TOE and pre-procedure planning gated CT). It is desirable that the successful candidate demonstrates interest and engagement in structural TOE, along with commitment to weekly MDTs for valvular heart disease.
The cardiac diagnostics department is responsible for performing 400-500 TOEs per year, and the training offered for this specific modality will include 3D post processing.
There is collaborative working with theatres/ITU, with an excellent relationship with the large group of intensivists who also perform high quality TOE. In addition, over 600 stress echocardiograms are performed per year (treadmill/bike/dobutamine/pacing), and this service supports the complex valve disease and cardiomyopathy services, as well ischaemia testing. The cardiac CT service is led by Radiology, with over 2000 gated scans performed per year, which includes studies planning for complex surgical (Ross, aortic repair) and percutaneous procedures.
With regards to on call cardiology/general medicine cover, there are no requirements for this attached to this post.

This appointment will be based at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital. LHCH has seven imaging cardiologists who have extensive experience in multi-modality cardiac imaging. Specialist interests are wide ranging and include heart valve disease, structural intervention, inherited cardiac conditions, cardio-oncology, sports cardiology and ACHD. All of the consultant imaging group are actively involved in national and international educational and/or academic programmes.
The TAVI/structural team work closely with the imaging group, and currently consist of six interventional cardiologists. The service is expanding with new appointments imminent, and there is collaborative working with dedicated nurse specialists, cardiac and vascular surgeons. Approximately 500 TAVIs will be performed this year, with a recently established TEER service gaining experience and consultant recruitment. Additional structural work includes PFO, paravalvular leak and VSD closure.
LHCH provides excellence with regards to care for patients with heart valve disease. The valve clinic has been well established for several years and is run using an MDT approach comprising the consultant group, cardiac physiologists and a heart valve nurse. The service offers specific expertise to the complex group of patients under surveillance with borderline severe valve disease, as well as guiding patients towards surgical and transcatheter treatment via the multidisciplinary team.
The radiology department provides outstanding technology for cardiothoracic imaging. There are two MRI scanners including a wide bore (1.5T cardiac optimized Siemens Sola MR scanner and a 3T VIDA Siemens), and two dual energy Siemens force CT scanners. CT images are analysed using dedicated software (Syngo via), with the cardiologist/radiologist group offering image analysis training if required
