This post would suit applicants wishing to further their career in cardiothoracic surgery and gain further experience in the speciality, although it is not educationally approved. Successful applicants will be allocated time in theatre for surgical training as well as protected educational days to be spent in clinic, multidisciplinary team meetings, for audit and research as well as other educational activities.

All duties will be carried out within the Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital. As well as the resident care of patients in the Cardiothoracic Surgical Wards, the post-holder will have the opportunity to assist in both routine and emergency operations.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

INTRODUCTION

 

Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital provides a service in the speciality to Merseyside, North Wales, and Parts of Lancashire, Cheshire and the Isle of Man. This catchment area has a population of 2.8 million people.

 

Around 2,000 Open Heart Procedures and 700 Major Thoracic operations are carried out each year; thus there is a wide variety of Pulmonary, Cardiac and Thoracic Aortic work.

 

There is a close relationship with the Cardiology Department and with an active Respiratory Medical Unit.

 

Postgraduate teaching is a regular feature in the Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital.

JOB SUMMARY

This post would suit applicants wishing to further their career in cardiothoracic surgery and gain further experience in the speciality, although it is not educationally approved and not a formal training programme position. Successful applicants will be allocated time in theatre for surgical training, delivered by our experienced consultant, surgical care practioners and senior registrars. Time for educational activities, clinics, multidisciplinary team meetings, for audit and research as well as other educational activities are both formally scheduled but able to be built into the rota with guidance from rota co-ordinators.

 

All duties will be carried out within the Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital. As well as the resident care of patients in the Cardiothoracic Surgical Wards. The post-holder will have the opportunity to assist in both routine and emergency operations and manage both elective, urgent and emergency cases.

 

 

The postholder will work alongside and at the same level as the other ST1/2 CT1/2 level doctors, who are linked to the Core Surgical Training Scheme. There is a modular training programme in place.

 

The rota includes a between 1 in 6 and 1 in 7 weekend and ‘on call’ commitment. Currently there are no night duties.

 

All successful applicants will be given a named consultant educational supervisor who will meet with them and plan a learning agreement with them.

 

STUDY AND TRAINING

 

The hospital has a specialist library and there are also Knowledge and Education facilities. Research opportunities are available at the hospital, depending on the inclination and interest of the successful candidate.

 

There is an active postgraduate medical education training programme within the hospital, which comprises tutorials, clinical conferences, audit meetings and journal clubs. It is mandatory for all ST1&2s / Trust Doctors to attend a minimum of 70% of the formal teaching sessions.  Other postgraduate medical education courses are also available in the locality.

 

 

ANNUAL LEAVE, STUDY LEAVE AND SICKNESS

 

 

Applications for both annual leave and study leave must be submitted at least six weeks prior to the intended absence.Leave must not be taken when the post-holder is covering the oncalls and the on call commitment must be swapped with colleagues to cover if required.

 

All applications for leave will be approved through a standard process.

 

Staff unable to attend for duty due to sickness should telephone the Administrative Specialist Registrar and the appropriate consultant between 8.00am and 9.00am on the first day of sickness.

 

Prospective cover applies for annual leave, study leave and short term sickness.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Completion of FY2 (or equivalent) year with a surgical rotation
Desirable criteria
  • Critical Care experience
  • 1 Year in Cardiothoracic Surgery at FY2 Level

Skills & Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge and ability to apply principals of cardio-respiratory physiology
  • Ability to perform minor operative procedures such as wound debridement, abscess drainage, wound closure etc.
  • Ability to cope with stress and take responsibility.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Production of good medical notes
  • Able to work in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Computer literacy
Desirable criteria
  • Post-operative management.
  • Thoracotomy, median sternotomy, harvesting of veins and arterial conduits for coronary artery surgery.
