Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital has an exciting opportunity for a Directorate Manager in Theatres to join our Surgical Team. This is a newly created role and ideal for an experienced operational leader who is looking to develop their career in a rewarding and dynamic environment - we welcome applications from clinical and non-clinical applicants. The Theatre department has 8 Cardiothoracic theatres and provides tertiary level elective and non-elective surgery across Cardiac, Thoracic, Vascular and ACHD specialties.

The successful candidate will have previous experience of leading teams in a diverse and complex environment and will work closely with multidisciplinary colleagues to deliver high quality, efficient and effective services for our population. The role encompasses strategic and operational responsibilities with the autonomy to develop services through transformation and operational excellence.

It’s an exciting time to join the Surgery Division at LHCH following the recent capital investment to build a new Cardiothoracic theatre. Offering a wide range of specialised services, LHCH has a Surgical Robot and offers a range of minimally invasive procedures providing cutting edge Cardiothoracic Surgery. The Directorate Manager will be critical in the development and expansion of the department to ensure that LHCH continues to offer the best cardiothoracic care to the patients and families we serve.

There is a requirement to take part in the manager on call rota.

Main duties of the job

The Directorate Manager for Theatres will have responsibility for delivery of the day to day operational management of the Operating Theatres department within the Surgery Division. They will work closely with the Divisional Director of Operations, Clinical Leads, Matrons and colleagues across all Divisions to ensure that the Directorate delivers its financial, activity and quality targets. The post holder will be responsible for ensuring that the Directorate delivers safe, efficient and effective care, proactively managing productivity in collaboration with the multi-disciplinary team.

The Directorate Manager will be instrumental in the planning and delivery of service developments as required by the divisional strategy. Whilst the role is specific to a function within the Division, the post holder will also be required to work in conjunction with all other functions within other Divisions to contribute to delivery of the Trust’s operational performance and strategy.

Qualifications & Education

Essential criteria
  • Educated to Master Level or equivalent level of experience
  • Recognised management qualification
  • Evidence of continued professional development

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • At least 3 years’ experience in NHS or similar environment in an operational / strategic management position at a senior level
  • Experience of effective budgetary management and planning at a senior level
  • Proven success in business planning and in the development and effective implementation of strategic plans in a complex clinical service
  • Experience of service redesign and development
  • Detailed knowledge and understanding of NHS targets and topical NHS, issues
  • Experience in leading and managing diverse teams
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of utilisation of service improvement techniques
  • Experience of working in a Theatre / Cath Lab or similar complex clinical environment
